The James Cox Gallery is located on an idyllic six-acre compound in the historic art colony of Woodstock, New York. Visitors are able to enjoy outdoor sculpture gardens, the Goetz studio and modern gallery facilities all surrounded by the famous Little Beaverkill Creek (renowned for trout fishing). Focusing on twentieth century American Art, our extensive inventory includes works from the estates

of five American painters and sculptors all of whom are exclusively represented by James Cox. Additional selections of historic American art are always available and change weekly. Moreover, James Cox has maintained close working relationships with and represents the work of many of the country’s top artists. See Gallery Selections for an overview of these emerging and established artists. There is a special emphasis on artwork produced by artists of Woodstock, both past and present.

Humor takes center stage in our June 7th Collectors Exchange Fine Art Auction, with original ink drawings by some of the country’s most celebrated cartoonists crossing the auction block. Featured in the sale are original cartoons by renowned New Yorker cartoonist Dana Fradon (1922 - 2019), consigned directly from his estate. Fradon was the last surviving cartoonist from the magazine’s legendary Harold Ross era and contributed more than a thousand drawings to the iconic publication over the course of his career. He and his wife, celebrated comic book illustrator Ramona Fradon (1926 – 2024), called Woodstock home for many years.
Additional highlights include works by fellow New Yorker cartoonists Robert Maxwell Weber (1924–2016), Donald Reilly (1933–2006), Richard Taylor (1902–1970), and William O’Brian (b. 1911–d. ?), each bringing their own wit and distinct perspective to the art of cartooning.

For our June 7th Collectors Exchange Fine Art Auction, we’re excited to feature works by Woodstock landscape painters - including this dramatic seascape by Anton Otto Fischer. Titled Crashing Waves, this striking work is offered as Lot 150, and showcases the artist’s bold and expressive handling of color. Be sure to register on LiveAuctioneers or Invaluable for this incredible sale.
Born in Germany and orphaned at an early age, Fischer came to America in the early 1900s as a deckhand aboard a German vessel. After several months at sea, he paid his way off the ship and continued sailing on American vessels. Following years of travel and artistic study, Fischer sold his first illustration to Harper’s Weekly in 1910 and soon began a nearly fifty-year relationship illustrating for The Saturday Evening Post.
Fischer’s mastery of maritime subjects earned him national recognition during World War II, when Vice Admiral Russell Waesche, Commandant of the Coast Guard, hired him for the purpose of recruiting, and to document the heroic efforts of the MErchant Mariners and Coast Guardsmen, then among the least publicized branches of the armed forces. His imagery left a lasting impression; U.S. Navy Commander Lincoln Lothrop once wrote to the artist: “My two lads, one of whom is now a twenty-two-year-old lieutenant in the Navy… used to cut out your pictures and pin them on the walls of their rooms… You are responsible for recruiting many a seagoing lad.”
