The JMPS shall preserve the character and integrity of the building known as the James Memorial Art Center through ongoing restoration and
provide the public and itself with the means and location to promote and present visual arts, historic and educational programs, and other events in keeping with the spirit of the organization. ART CLASSES:
Scheduled in three seasons, the James offers a vari
ety of classes to students, kindergartner through adult. Classes may include wire sculpture, pottery, paper making, mosaics, calligraphy, watercolor, oil painting, sketching, quilting & stained glass. MEMBERSHIP:
The existence of the James Memorial Art Center depends on community support from memberships, donations, memorials & grants. With the exception of $3,500 received annually from the City of Williston, the James Memorial Preservation Society is solely responsible for the Centerโs operating expenses. As a member of the James Memorial Preservation Society, you are making a commitment to the continuation of visual arts in the community & the ongoing preservation & restoration of the historic building. The Main Gallery hosts exhibitions by local, regional and national artists each month. This grand room features a cove ceiling and a vaulted dome with a stained glass skylight, paneled oak doors, four marble columns, arched windows and a polished cork floor. The Gallery II, adjacent to the Main Gallery in the addition, is used for exhibitions, performances, meetings and receptions. A Kitchenette, accessible to both Main Gallery and Green Room, provides a double sink, microwave, freezer and refrigerator. Center Stage, on the floor below the Main Gallery, features an auditorium for performances, lectures and other presentations. Attributes include a stage, the original wooden floor and a fireplace of Hebron brick. The Art Classroom, also in the lower level, is dedicated to workshops and classes for youth and adults. The James is handicap accessible via an elevator on the north side of the building. Facilities can be rented for private and public meetings, receptions, reunions and parties.
