Meet featured artist Karlien van Rooyen!

A South African ceramic sculptor, Karlien’s unconventional path to art has taken her from studying neuroscience and working in medical science to spending six years as a full-time environmental activist, living in remote bush blockades alongside Indigenous communities.

After leaving frontline activism, Karlien turned to art as a form of healing. Today, she works primarily in clay, exploring resilience, social transformation, and our entanglement with the natural world. Drawing inspiration from wild landscapes, and through the tactile language of clay, Karlien’s sculptures often explore the ways in which we endure, adapt, and transform in response to the environment around us.

Meet emerging artist Yonela Nsimbi!

A contemporary South African visual artist, Yonela creates photorealistic charcoal portraits of young people, including his friends, from Khayelitsha, Cape Towns, capturing them in various moments of a night out on the town. Their expressions radiate pride and confidence as the evening ahead lays before them, set expectantly in the background.

Through his skillful use of charcoal, Yonela captures the individuality and energy of a new generation.

Meet featured artist Mohau Modisakeng!

Born in Soweto in 1986 and working between Johannesburg and Cape Town, Mohau explores the histories and narratives that have shaped post-apartheid South Africa and the broader post-colonial African experience. Through photography, film, installations, and performance, he often focuses on the black body to examine ideas of memory, violence, identity, and fragmentation.

His work asks us to consider how the past continues to live in the present, and how the body can continue to carry histories long after society has changed.

Mohau has represented South Africa at the Venice Biennale and exhibited internationally at institutions and biennales including the Saatchi Gallery, Dak’Art Biennale, Performa, and Sharjah Biennial.

Meet our youngest featured artist, Aerin Dyason!

Born in 2005 and based in Cape Town, Aerin has been creating art since childhood. Her abstract portraits begin with minimalist lines that unfold into bold, expressive forms. Working with limited vision, Aerin begins from a single point, the small area of her visual field where she can focus, and gradually builds her figures outwards.

For Aerin, art is just the beginning. She looks toward a future that includes public speaking, writing, and fashion, and hopes to inspire others along the way:

“I want to teach others that anything is achievable, regardless of the limits the world imposes.”
