Wayback Wednesday. Williamston was the home to many coal mining operations over the years-both vertical/horizontal shafts and open pits. The mining sites were at the east end of High Street, also east of Mill Street, also south of the railroad tracks near Mill Street, and at the old clay pit along East Grand River (now Williamston Estates). Here are Williamston coal miners and their sons in an open pit in town. From the photo collection of Linda Lechler Siciliano-whose ancestor, Thomas Jenkins, owned and operated the coal mine on High Street in the 1910s.
