After moving to rural Pennsylvania in 1968, Paul Lehr turned to wood and stone carving, drawing inspiration from the natural landscape and taking advantage of the abundance of trees on his property.

“Paul Lehr: A Hidden Universe,” on exhibit through Nov. 22 at The Gallery at Penn College, offers a rare look at the work of the late science fiction artist, bringing together his best-known paintings and a body of sculpture that remained outside the public eye during his lifetime.

Once he broke into the industry, Paul Lehr began earning a living as an illustrator for book covers and magazines. By the 1960s, his science fiction artwork gained color and a surrealistic style, setting it apart from the work of many of his contemporaries. Through imaginative landscapes and otherworldly forms, Lehr helped define the visual language of science fiction for a generation of readers.

Every artist has a moment when possibility becomes reality.

Paul Lehr's creative path gained momentum with the publication of two book cover illustrations: 'Satellite E One' (1957) and 'Tales of Space and Time' (1958). In these paintings, we can see he was already developing the realism and technical precision that would distinguish his work for years to come. This was the beginning of a lifelong artistic journey.
