In “Union Square” (2014), American painter Linda Lippa juxtaposes a highly rendered scene at a Union Square metro stop with blurred subjects in the foreground. According to Lippa, her work “attempts to convey a sense of speed and perpetual motion” because she believes that we as a society have “lost the ability to punctuate time and that our individual experiences are no longer distinct but instead blend into the miasma that is the passage of time.”

Wythe County, Virginia played an integral role in the extraction of lead ore for musket ball production during the Revolutionary War. An enslaved man named Aberdeen (upper right) defied his Loyalist master’s orders and volunteered to enlist in the Continental Army, where he labored in the lead mines. After petitioning to the Virginia House of Delegates, Aberdeen was granted his freedom in 1783.

"First Looks & Favorites from the Permanent Collection," now on view at the Muscarelle, brings together works that span centuries and cultures, placing recent acquisitions with longstanding highlights from our permanent collection.

Among the favorites on view again is Hung Liu’s "Raising the Red Lantern" (1992-1993), a work that engages directly with history and memory. Drawing from archival photographs, Liu reinterprets images of women in pre-revolutionary China through layers of paint and the incorporation of mixed media elements. Her practice reflects an ongoing interest in the relationship between documentation and interpretation, as well as the ways in which histories are constructed and preserved. In the context of the exhibition, the work’s material complexity and layered imagery resonate with newer works that similarly explore identity and narrative.

Docent-led tours of "First Looks and Favorites from the Permanent Collection" are offered Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 1 PM. Visit this weekend to explore the art in depth!
