Mah Jongg at the Museum starts tomorrow! We’re thrilled to partner with the Mah Jongg Social Club for this fun, hands-on three-week series.

Looking for something fun to do this afternoon? Join us today from 12–4 PM at the Swetland Homestead for Games Day!

Step back in time and discover how families entertained themselves before modern technology. Visitors can try a variety of 18th- and 19th-century games, both inside the historic Homestead and outdoors on the grounds, including:

• “Shut the Box”
• Croquet
• Horseshoes
• Hoop rolling
• Marbles
• Period baseball games
• And more!

Come experience the games enjoyed by families in the past and get a hands-on look at everyday life in earlier generations.

Tomorrow as part of our Swetland Homestead Games Day, you can play twelve different games from the 18th and 19th centuries, including getting to use our 1860s Base Ball (two words!) equipment!

Games Day runs from noon until 4pm tomorrow at the Swetland Homestead, so we hope to see you there! Games will be running continuously all afternoon, so drop in at your leisure!

Tickets are $10 for LCHS members, $15 for non-members and just $5 for kids up to 17 years of age. No reservations are necessary, tickets available at door. Period dress is welcomed, but not required.

Ready to learn a new game, sharpen your strategy, or take your Mah Jongg skills to the next level?

The Luzerne County Historical Society invites the community to discover the excitement, strategy, and social fun of Mah Jongg with “Mah Jongg at the Museum,” a three-evening program designed for players of all skill levels!

Mah Jongg instructors Laurie White-Gumula and Lexie Kelly frrom Mah Jongg Social Club will guide participants through the fundamental skills needed to build confidence at the table.

Your registration includes:
🀄 A Mah Jongg card to borrow during the evenings
🎟️ One complimentary ticket to either Haunted Spirits and Shadows at Swetland Homestead in October 2026 or Christmas at Swetland in December 2026

And there’s more! During your visit, explore a unique piece of history currently on exhibit at the museum: a 1929 Mah Jongg set, offering a fascinating glimpse into the game's enduring popularity and cultural significance.
