Old Meeting House Museum of Wilbraham

Old Meeting House Museum of Wilbraham The Old Meeting House Museum is the home of the Atheneum Society of Wilbraham.

The Atheneum was incorporated in 1963 as a non-profit organization by a group of concerned townspeople. Their purpose was to form a permanent local group to preserve artifacts and memorabilia relating to the people and history of Wilbraham. The operation of our organization is funded entirely by the dues, gifts, and activities of our membership, which is open to all interested persons from Wilbraham and other communities.

Mission: Mission Statement: The Atheneum Society of Wilbraham exists to preserve local history and culture within the context of the town’s historic Old Meeting House and Hearse House museums to share knowledge, educate and involve our local community. Value Statement: We value the camaraderie of community and our accomplishments as preservationists and historic property caretakers by interpreting historic collections and artifacts through meaningful exhibits and maintaining our historic structures. We engage in educational, social and interactive programs to preserve the organization and ensure that local history is conserved for future generations.

The Timothy Merrick House on Main Street in Wilbraham, Mass was built around 1761 for Timothy Merrick, who was 22 years old and engaged to be married. However, while working in the fields across from the house in August 1761, he was bit by a rattlesnake and died several hours later, becoming the last recorded death from a venomous snake bite in Massachusetts history. The house is seen in the late 1800s in the first photo, and it stood here until 1955, when it burned down, and it was subsequently replaced with a modern house. Lost New England

From the family photo albums: this house in Wilbraham Mass was built in the late 1700s by my great-great-great-great-great grandfather, Revolutionary War veteran Samuel Warner, Jr. The first photo was taken in 1923 during the Warner family reunion, and includes my grandmother, who is seated in the front row just to the right of the large tear in the photo. Today, the house serves as offices for the Country Club of Wilbraham, and according to the employee that I spoke with, the upper floors are still haunted by some distant ancestor of mine.
