It was a great privilege and honor to welcome General Minihan and the AMC Civics Leaders to Wichita and the Kansas Aviation Museum. McConnell is a shining beacon for our country.
Howard and Joe Funk began their aviation manufacturing in Akron, OH, but due to several difficulties in the 1930's and 1940, they were forced into bankruptcy. Some folks in Coffeyville saw an opportunity to help the brothers, and along with that came the birth of the Funk Aircraft Company. They'd go on to build a total of 320 aircraft between their two companies.
We have begun restoration on the Funk B-85 in our cloth and fabric shop. Led by Ed Scott, the restoration of this place will involve taking the plane down to the wood frame and recovering the plane. If you'd like to learn more about the process of cloth and fabric planes, we'd love to have you volunteer and learn! This dying art needs to be continued and preserved.
It’s great to have with us another true legend in aviation work, Mr. Paul Bowen. Paul is a famed photographer in aviation and has been very helpful in the world of cinematography. Paul is also a member of the Kansas Aviation Hall of Fame and International Air and Space Hall of Fame.
We want to give a shout out to our friends at Exploration Place on the reveal of their Master Plan this week. The vision of Adam Smith and their team is inspiring for our community. When one succeeds, we all can succeed.

We pause today to remember the violent acts that took place on Sept. 11th, 2001. Many innocent passengers were killed that day, as well as brave men and women who ran to the danger to save lives. We stop to honor their legacy, pray for their families, and remember those who are still dealing with the aftermath of that day. God Bless America.
Get your tickets for Friday or Saturday!!! It’s going to be a fun evening. Just $30 to investigate KAM!
The Kansas Aviation Museum aims to Inspire, Preserve, Educate and Commemorate Kansas Aviation for the Future.
Clyde Cessna was not immune from the Great Depression crash. The stock market crash and effects would take its toll on the Cessna Company. In 1929, just 2 years after opening, Clyde would shut down operations. It wouldn’t be for another 5 years, when his nephew, Dwayne Wallace and others would encourage the reformation of Cessna in 1934. Clyde would go on to retire in 1935.
Don’t forget to get your tickets! We have some available for Friday, and several options for Saturday!!!

Our 3rd and final inductee in the 2023 Kansas Aviation Hall Of Fame is Mr. Herb Pello. Herb was a design engineer for Cessna, a multi engine instructor, and just happened to own a Piper Apache. With that; it was all that was needed for Prairie Air Service to start. Mr. Pello would spend the next 43 years operating his business and instructing hundreds of students and logging over 35,000 flight hours.
Join us on November 9th, 2023 for the induction of Mr. Pello and our two other inductees for the Kansas Honors Awards Banquet. Tickets go on sale Monday, September 11th.
Our 2nd inductee into this year’s 2023 Class for the Kansas Aviation Hall of Fame is former Cessna Vice-President and Chief Engineer, Thomas Salter. Graduating with Dwayne Wallace, Tom joined Cessna Aviation in the 30’s. His work as chief engineer would be instrumental in the design of the 150, 172 and T-37 among other planes. His legacy continues to live on today through the continued evolution of aviation work that comes from Textron Aviation.
Introducing our first inductee of the 2023 Class for the Kansas Aviation Hall of Fame is Frank Petersen. Born in Topeka, KS on March 2, 1931, Frank Petersen graduated from Topeka High School and went on to serve our country in the Korean War, Vietnam War, and as commander at Quantico. Frank Petersen became the first black pilot and General in the U.S. Marine Corps. He had over 350 combat missions and 4,000 flying hours. He served as the commander of the "Black Knights" tactical squadron during the Korean War. He earned the titles of "Silver Hawk" and "Grey Eagle". He was promoted to General in 1975, and retired as a Lieutenant General.
Learn more about Lt. General Petersen in his autobiography "Into the Tiger's Jaw: America's First Black Marine Aviator".
