Herschel Logan (1901-1987) was a founding member of the Prairie Print Makers Society that formed in 1930. His peers considered Logan one of the foremost printmakers in Kansas. From 1921 to 1938, Logan made approximately 140 woodcut prints. Logan's childhood was spent on a farm near Winfield, Ks and in the early 1930's he was named Art Director for Consolidated Printing in Salina and remained there until his retirement in 1967. Kansas State Capital muralist of abolitionist John Brown was painted by John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) born in Dunavant, Ks. (30 miles west of Leavenworth). Curry gained national reputation for his Kansas rural scenes of people terrorized by tornadoes, drab living conditions, and spirited animals. During Curry's life, Kansas long neglected its native son but in 1937 did commission him to do a series of murals for its state capitol in Topeka for $20,000. Kansas artist Henry Varnum Poor was born in Chapman, Ks (1887) but moved to the family farm 4 miles north of Bonner Springs (1911). During the 1930's, Poor was invited to illustrate The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and The Call of the Wild by Jack London. Poor also painted murals in both the U.S. Departments of Justice and Interior. Mid-America Fine Arts in Wichita is proud to have 10 artworks for sale by this great well respected Kansas artist.

Alfred Wands (1904-1998) known as the "Dean of Colorado Landscape Painters" was born in Cleveland but moved to Denver in 1930 to direct the art program at Colorado Women's College. In 1955, Wands retired from teaching and opened his own studio and gallery in Estes Park. James Wells Champney was born in Boston in 1843 and after the civil war opened studios in Boston and New York City. Champney is known for primarily pastels of landscapes and portraits. This old framed (23" x 19") pastel was painted in 1900 and is named "Portrait of Autumn" (1 of the 4 seasons set) but closely resembles his wife Lizzie. Champney died 1903 in a NYC elevator accident. This pastel is available at Mid-America Fine Arts in Wichita, Ks.

Alfred Montgomery "The Corn Painter" (1857-1922) was born in Lawndale, IL but was orphaned very young. He was "bound out" to farmers until the age of 21 with $100. In 1887, he introduced art into Kansas Public Schools by teaching art classes in Topeka, Ks. Alfred Montgomery is known for farm animals and landscapes but best known for corn still life paintings. This 27" x 15" marble bust named Venezia was made in 1865 and is a tribute to Venice, Italy and Mead's wife who was the model. The Metropolitan Museum in NY also displays one of only ten produced. uth Nettleton (1901-1973) was born in Oklahoma and moved to New England in the 1920's where she settled in Rockport, MA and became a longstanding and respected member of the Rockport and North Shore Art Associations. Her paintings are best known for seascapes around Rockport, Gloucester, and landscapes in Vermont . This nicely framed 11" x 9" Reproduction is called Motif #1, which is a fishing shack located in Rockport and known to art students as "the most often-painted building in America."

John Edward Costigan, N.A. (1888-1972) was a self-taught artist but became a skilled landscape and figure painter. During the 1920’s he earned many awards for his oils, watercolors, and prints. In 1928, he was elected to the National Academy of Design. Costigan was well known in the NY area and painted what he loved which included his wife, children, and his farm in NY. Birger Sandzén (1871-1954) born in Sweden but moved to Lindsborg, Ks in 1894 to teach painting at Bethany College where he remained on the faculty until 1946. Sandzén is known for thick and heavy application of bold and bright colors of mountain lakes, boulders, and trees. This 10" x 14" watercolor named Timberline Pines Pikes Peak was painted in 1923 and was featured on KPTS Antiques Roadshow on Monday 6/14/21. The licensed appraiser from Art of Estates, Brady Dreasher stated this Sandzén watercolor was painted at Sandzén's most sought after period and was appraised at $15,000.
