This painting holds incredible sentimental value as it was created by an elephant as a gift on the day our client's daughter was born. In the process of moving here as our new elephant keeper to the Sedgwick County Zoo here in Wichita, the piece was accidentally damaged.
Because it was originally made with washable, nontoxic paint, restoring it required a very delicate, thoughtful approach. We brought Steve Murillo from
Steve Murillo Studio & Gallery who handled the project with extraordinary care and skill.
We're thrilled with the final result.
Steve's work has helped restore both the spirit of the original creation and the deep emotional connection our client's family has with it.

Creating a beautiful African painting for Jim, owner of Tanginyika Wildlife Park! In this video, I’m doing a quick demo on mounting canvas archivally versus restretching it onto wood stretcher bars. Many artists don’t realize that if there isn’t enough excess canvas around the artwork, it limits the ability to properly restretch. When done by a trained picture framer using archival adhesives and boards, mounting becomes the next best option for preserving the piece. We just love getting to work with our little African animal friends through projects like this!

Art and Earth Day go hand in hand as powerful expressions of care, creativity, and connection to the planet. Art has the ability to move people emotionally, making environmental issues feel personal and urgent. It gives voice to the beauty of nature and the need to protect it, often sparking reflection and action in ways words alone cannot. Earth Day is a reminder to live more sustainably, and through art—especially when created with recycled materials or inspired by the natural world—we celebrate that mission. Together, art and Earth Day encourage a deeper appreciation for both our environment and the creative spirit that thrives within it.
