Awesome news for those who haven't heard — Wichita Veterans can now ride for FREE on any Wichita Transit bus or Q-Line trolley!

#Wichita #WichitaTransit #WichitaVeterans #Vets #grateful

Vets, here’s a program to get on board with! Veterans Ride Free is a new, two-year pilot program that allows veterans to ride any Wichita Transit bus or Q-line FREE of charge! Within an hour of launching the program in late July, 20 vets took advantage. By the end of the first month, roughly 90 vets were taking free transportation daily. Just show a valid veteran's ID when you board. 💪🚌👍

Special thanks to Bank of America for funding the first year of the pilot program. This initiative is a partnership between The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center, United Way of the Plains and City of Wichita- Government to ensure the lives of veterans are not limited by a lack of transportation.

In 1942, the U.S. government rounded up more than 120,000 Japanese Americans and Japanese nationals living in the United States and sent them to incarceration camps. Forty years later, community members pushed the nation to confront the wrong it had done — and to make it right.

How could this happen? How can we prevent this from happening again?

We invite you to learn about the overlooked history shared in our newest traveling display, "Righting A Wrong: Japanese Americans and World War II."

Did You Know? The phrase "Keep Calm and Carry On" originated as a British slogan in 1939, to the spring before World War II. Anticipating the dark days ahead, the British government designed a poster to hang in areas being targeted by German bombers.

In Fraser McAlpine's book, "Stuff Brits Like," he breaks down the historical roots of the phrase.

"There is something quintessential in the way the posters do not say 'Don't Panic' or 'We Will Prevail'... They say 'Keep Calm,' and what that means is, 'We may be suffering something of an invasion at the moment, but that's no reason to start acting in a rash and hot-headed manner. We may be a subjugated nation — temporarily — but we are not about to start acting like savages.'"

"And what of the 'Carry On?'... As a nation, we have been trained to look past the bad behavior of our rudest guests, especially the uninvited ones, and rather than cause a scene, we shall just go about our daily business as if nothing has happened."

Fun fact: Edward Stratemeyer created the plot outline of the Nancy Drew series, but he hired other writers to do the actual writing. It is believed that as many as six different writers were involved in writing the original 56 Nancy Drew novels.

The name "Carolyn Keene" was printed on the books and used as a collective pseudonym over the years.

#OnThisDay in history, September 12, 1992, Mae C. Jemison, an American engineer and physician, was the first Black woman to travel into outer space.

After graduating high school at just 16 years old, she entered Stanford University. While attending, Mae served as head of the Black Students Union and also choreographed a musical and dance production called "Out of the Shadows." During her senior year in college, she struggled with the choice between going to medical school or pursuing a career as a professional dancer after graduation.

Mae graduated from Stanford in 1977, receiving a B.S. degree in chemical engineering and B.A. degree in African and African-American studies. While at Stanford, she also pursued studies related to her childhood interest in space and first considered applying to NASA.

Fast forward to September 12, 1992 — Mae became the first Black Woman to travel to space as a Mission Specialist on the 50th space flight of NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. During over 190 hours she spent in space, she conducted experiments on weightlessness and motion sickness.

Mae left NASA in 1993 and founded a technology research company. She later formed a non-profit educational foundation and through the foundation is the principal of the 100 Year Starship project funded by DARPA. Mae also wrote several books for children and appeared on television several times, including in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. She holds several honorary doctorates and has been inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame and the International Space Hall of Fame.

"We headed straight to the petting zoo where she was very excited to find that donkeys come in a miniature size. We then headed across the bridge, stopping to feed the swarms of beautiful sunset-colored Koi fish greeting us with open mouths. We spent a good chunk of time in the Rain Forest. The combination of that familiar musky smell and the look in Sadie’s eyes as she came across all of those strange and beautiful birds transported me to my own childhood zoo days gone by..."

An Open Letter to Arts and Cultural Industries: You Matter…More Than Ever

"When we awaken from this public health nightmare, it is to be hoped that ingenious methods of fusing physical and virtual opportunities for arts engagement will have permitted a larger and broader distribution of Americans—from all racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and geographic backgrounds—to experience such events as artists and audiences. The creativity, boldness, and panache you are bound to bring to this systemic challenge are sure to be your salvation, and ours."

Thinking of all our partners in the world of arts & culture, today and always!

This is a Labor Day shout-out to all the arts workers and organizations who contribute so mightily to the nation’s economic and cultural vitality and to the social and emotional well-being of its residents and communities.

Did you know that David Bowie performed his song "Heroes" at the Berlin Wall in 1987?

"I'll never forget that. It was one of the most emotional performances I've ever done," Bowie said in his "Performing Songwriter" interview. "They'd backed up the stage to the wall itself so that the wall was acting as our backdrop. We heard that a few of the East Berliners might get the chance to hear the thing, but we didn't realize in what numbers they would. And there were thousands on the other side that had come close to the wall. So it was like a double concert where the wall was the division."

"We would hear them cheering and singing along from the other side. God, even now I get choked up. It was breaking my heart. I'd never done anything like that in my life, and I guess I never will again."

"We did it in Berlin last year as well – 'Heroes.' This time, what was so fantastic is that the audience – it was the Max Schmeling Hall, which holds about 10-15,000 – half the audience had been in East Berlin that time way before. So now I was face-to-face with the people I had been singing it to all those years ago. And we were all singing it together. Again, it was powerful. Things like that really give you a sense of what performance can do. They happen so rarely at that kind of magnitude. Most nights I find very enjoyable. These days, I really enjoy performing. But something like that doesn't come along very often, and when it does, you kind of think, 'Well, if I never do anything again, it won't matter.'"

Sections of the Berlin Wall can be found all over the world in places like the Vatican Gardens, the men's bathroom of the Main Street Station Casino in Las Vegas, and even on the first floor of the Museum of World Treasures, right across from Ivan the T. rex!

The Nancy Drew series has been a cultural phenomenon for over 80 years and across hundreds of books, movies, TV shows, and computer games. In fact, aside from merely loving the Nancy Drew books, many of today's most influential women have cited the fictional character as a real-life inspiration for helping them to realize that women could truly do anything.

Join us virtually or in-person (with coffee from The Spice Merchant - Wichita’s Original Gourmet Coffee Roaster) for an interesting scoop on the famous fictional detective, presented by Deborah Hann!
