How do we keep artifacts from getting broken? What happens when one does break? Most of our artifacts are a part of the Museum's permanent collection and can only be handled by trained staff or volunteers. A few items, like the one you see here, are in our Education Collection and can be handled by the public during educational programs. When an item is broken, we carefully document the incident with photos and written reports and then follow best practices to preserve and, if possible, repair it.

We want to share some background information to go with our Day 13 videos, which will come in a little bit. Today's prompt is “Best Moment” and, for many of us who work here, this prompt takes us back to one exact moment in 2019. Fortunately, this moment was caught on camera with the help of Visit Wichita.

To understand how special this moment was, however, we need to give background information on the videos you will see. In September 2019, a group called the Berlin Airlift Veteran’s Association (BAVA) had its 75th annual meeting right here in Wichita, KS. These veterans flew a humanitarian relief mission bringing food and supplies to the people in East Berlin ing the late 1940s.

Fourteen Berlin Airlift veterans made it to this event, including the Candy Bomber himself, Col. Gail Halvorsen. However, no one at the event expected what happened during a question-and-answer session with the panel of veterans.

A small, white-haired woman in the crowd raised her hand to ask a question and began speaking in a cracked voice. She talked about her experience as a survivor of East Berlin during the Cold War. She spoke about the impact The Candy Bomber had on her life and about her pride in becoming an American. This unexpectedly passionate addition to the event left many present misty-eyed.

We will share the video of Ingrid Azvedo’s testimony in a few minutes. We hope you find this moment from 2019 as impactful as we did.

This is a hidden staircase located right in the middle of our Museum exhibits. It is closed and blocked by doors on both ends and isn't even lit up. It's a little eerie if you ask us! Where in the Museum do you think this staircase is located?

😓😓 "Too soon" is our reaction to this prompt. Many of you may remember that a large fire occurred outside and up against our building earlier this year. The fire inflicted almost no structural damage on our 1914 "fireproof, ratproof, and mouseproof" building. However, to this day, we are working on the maintenance of building systems affected by the smoke.

Did you know that each artifact in our collection needs both paper files and a digital record? And that a single record can take over an hour to create? We use a special museum collections database software called PastPerfect to help us track location, condition, exhibit history, and more on each item.

A story of impact to share: "I took a tour and one of the girls started talking about the Egyptian gods, so I had her come to the front and tell everyone. When the tour was over the teacher told me the girl was severely autistic and she had never heard her talk before." -Larry, a volunteer tour guide at MOWT
