#ArtifactSpotlight โจ This naval artillery shell (approximately 24 inches tall) was one of millions that were made in munitions (military factories) all across Europe. Artillery shells were stored in massive quantities and posed a serious threat to those working with them.
The Battle of Jutland was the largest naval battle of World War I, and one of the largest in history. It saw Britain's best ships, known as the Grand Fleet, face off against Germany's best ships, known as the High Sea Fleet. The battle involved more than 250 ships and 100,000 men.
The German navy lost 11 ships, including a battleship and a battle cruiser, and suffered 3,058 casualties; the British sustained heavier losses, with 14 ships sunk, including three battle cruisers, and 6,784 casualties.

They also decorated and named their own pet rocks! "Rock Cousteau" โ complete with a dapper mustache โ is pictured with his proud pet-owner. ๐

#TodayInHistory, January 19, 1903, the new bicycle race, "Tour de France," was announced. Sixty riders started the first Tour de France on July 1, 1903. The conditions were challenging, with the stages of the race often taking place on roads that were in a poor state. Bikes were very basic and heavy, compared to those used by modern day competitors. ๐ฒ
The Tour de France is now watched all around the world, with an audience that includes many non-cyclists, and is perhaps the greatest 'mainstream' endurance event there is.
Has you or someone you know raced in the Tour de France? Leave comment below! ๐

โHis body guards werenโt all that happy, but when he saw us, he was nothing but kind. He asked us questions about being students and what our futures held. We answered and as we were complimenting him, it was just beyond belief that we were standing there, right there... and that he was encouraging us directly to help make a difference."

#OnThisDay, January 13, 1953, Donald Argee โDonโ Barksdale became the first Black player to play in an NBA All-Star Game. Barksdale was also the first Black player to be named an NCAA All-American and the first to play on the United States menโs Olympic team.
Itโs no surprise that Barksdale he ended up in the Hall of Fame, even after playing his first professional basketball game as a 28-year-old rookie. His playing career in the NBA came to an end due to excessive ankle injuries, but he remains one of the more decorated players in the early days of the NBA.

#OnThisDay January 12, 2001, the Museum of World Treasures was born!
Dr. Jon and Lorna Kardatzke founded the Museum of World Treasures as a nonprofit organization in 2001 at the Garvey Center in downtown Wichita, Kansas. About two years later โ due to tremendous growth โ the Museum relocated to the well known "Farm & Art Market" building in Old Town. Our building is located just east of downtown and is a converted former paper warehouse.
Thank you for helping us grow all these years! #HappyBirthday to our little Wichita history!

Just like New Yearโs Eve, Omisoka (ๅคงๆฆๆฅ) is the Japanese tradition that celebrates the beginning of a new year with new possibilities. In preparation for a new year and a clean slate, people purify their homes and remove last yearโs clutter by cleaning from top to bottom. This is called โosoji."
Traditionally, those who celebrate have a feast with friends and family featuring historical Japanese foods. At 11 pm, many will gather to have one last meal of toshikoshi-soba (noodles). This is a tradition that comes from the belief that eating long noodles will give you a long life and help you cross from one year to the next! But Omisoka isnโt just about having a party, it is also considered a spiritual event for many Japanese people.
