In his inaugural address, Mandela, who spent 27 years of his life as a political prisoner of the South African government, declared that โ€œthe time for the healing of the wounds has come.โ€ Two weeks earlier, more than 22 million South Africans had turned out to cast ballots in the countryโ€™s first-ever multiracial parliamentary elections. An overwhelming majority chose Mandela and his African National Congress (ANC) party to lead the country.

Artifact Spotlight โœจ The use of gold paint in Buddhist art is said to symbolize the sun or fire. Gold paint was often used on Buddhist art from Tibet. The cap on the Large Golden Buddha head, however, is similar to that found on figures from Thailand.

#OnThisDay, April 29, 1429, French national heroine Joan of Arc and her troops entered the besieged city of Orlรฉans during the Hundred Years' War.

At the age of 16, the voices of Christian saints told Joan to aid Charles, the French dauphin, in gaining the French throne and expelling the English from France. Convinced of the validity of her divine mission, Charles gave Joan a small force of troops. She led her troops to Orlรฉans, and on April 29, as a French sortie distracted the English troops on the west side of the city, Joan entered unopposed by its eastern gate. Over the next week, Joan led the charge during a number of skirmishes and battles. On one occasion, she was even hit by an arrow, but after dressing her wounds she returned to the battle. On May 8, the siege of Orlรฉans was broken, and the English retreated.
