October is Blindness Awareness Month!
At Envision Arts Center, accessibility is more than a feature of our space. It’s part of how we make art, build confidence, and create opportunities for blind and visually impaired artists to thrive independently.
Here are just a few ways we make our studio accessible:
🦯 Raised floor lines help guide our blind and visually impaired artists through the space, making it easier to navigate the studio independently.
🎨 Personal cubbies give each student a designated space for their belongings and projects, so they can walk into the studio and get started creating without assistance.
🔤 Braille and large-print labels on our art supplies help students find the materials they need and take ownership of their creative process.
These features may seem like small details, but they make a big difference. Accessibility means creating an environment where blind and visually impaired artists can explore their creativity, make their own choices, and participate fully in the arts.
Blindness is a spectrum, and every artist’s journey is different. Some artists have been blind their entire lives, while others are adjusting to changes in their vision. Everyone has different levels of vision, experiences, and ways of navigating the world. At Envision Arts Center, we meet each artist where they are in their blindness journey, recognizing their individual strengths, needs, and goals. We strive to provide the tools, resources, and support each person needs to explore their creativity and build independence in a way that works for them.
This Blindness Awareness Month, we’re celebrating the importance of accessibility, independence, and inclusion while continuing our mission to make the arts accessible to everyone.
Because every artist deserves the opportunity to create, express themselves, and thrive.
