Lexington & Concord

The Shot Heard ‘Round the World

“Stand your ground, do not fire unless fired upon. If they mean to have a war, let it begin here.”

-Captain John Parker at Lexington Green

We have all heard of Paul Revere’s “Midnight Ride”, and “the shot heard round the world.” But how much of the stories are myth and how much is truth?

Discover the events of April 19, 1775, when tensions between Great Britain and its American colonies erupted into open conflict at Lexington and Concord, one of the best documented battles of the American Revolution. In this engaging Lunch & Learn, explore how a British mission to seize colonial weapons sparked the first battles of the American Revolution, and how local militias of ordinary citizens rose in resistance. Learn about the midnight alarm, the confrontation on Lexington Green, and the “shot heard ’round the world” that marked the beginning of a war for independence as we examine the people, places, and lasting impact of this pivotal day when a single moment set a revolution in motion and forever changed the course of history.

Join us for the final presentation of our three-part series “Road to Independence - Sparks That Ignited a Revolution” as MNTX celebrates America 250 with this special speakers series. Presented by Museum of North Texas History's Director of Learning & Engagement, Morgan Meyer, Road to Independence is a great way to kickoff a historic summer!

This month’s Bite of History is Thursday, June 25th. Doors open at 11:30am and presentation starts promptly at 12:00pm.

Tickets are $10 for MNTX Members and $15 for the general public. Tickets are expected to go fast, with only 40 tickets available for this month’s presentation. Tickets are available for purchase in person at the Museum or online.

Often overshadowed by their male counterparts, the Daughters of Liberty played a vital role in the fight for American independence. This month's presentation explores how Patriot women organized behind the scenes to resist British oppression through boycotts, homemade goods, and community action. From spinning bees and tea substitutes to direct involvement in Revolutionary events, these women proved that political resistance was not limited to the battlefield. Join us to learn how figures like Abigail Adams and countless unnamed women helped shape the course of the American Revolution through determination, resourcefulness, and collective action.

Memorial Day is a time of remembrance for the men and women of the United States military who gave their lives in service to our country.

A brief history:
It was originally known as Decoration Day, and began in the years following the Civil War, when communities across the nation gathered to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. The purpose was the same for both sides, honoring sacrifice and preserving memory.
In 1868, General John A. Logan called for a National Day of Remembrance, designating May 30 as a time to decorate the graves of those who died in defense of the nation. Over time, the holiday evolved to honor all American service members lost in war, and in 1971, it became a federally recognized holiday observed on the last Monday in May.

Today, as we reflect on this history, we are reminded that Memorial Day is about remembrance, gratitude, and the responsibility to carry these stories forward.

At the Museum of North Texas History, we honor those who served and sacrificed, and we remain committed to preserving their stories for future generations.

⚓ National Maritime Day – May 22 ⚓

On this day, we honor the maritime traditions that have helped shape our nation and recognize the role of the U.S. Merchant Marine.

National Maritime Day marks the anniversary of the SS Savannah’s historic 1819 voyage as the first steam-powered ship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. 🌍🚢

🌊 Did you know?

• About 90% of the world’s goods are transported by ship
• Modern cargo ships can carry over 21,000 containers
• Some ship engines are more than 1,000 times as powerful as a car engine

From global trade to everyday goods, the maritime industry keeps our world connected. Take a moment to reflect on its impact and the people who make it all possible.
