Most 1982 pennies are zinc and worth face value — but a rare few were struck on COPPER planchets by mistake. The Small Date variety with the Denver 'D' mint mark is the one to look for!

Here's how to check yours:
1️⃣ Look for 1982-D with SMALL date numbers
2️⃣ Weigh it — copper is 3.11 grams, zinc is 2.5 grams
3️⃣ If it's copper... you might have a $10,000+ penny!

In 1931, the San Francisco Mint struck just 866,000 Lincoln cents — the second-lowest mintage of any Lincoln cent ever made. The Great Depression had crushed coin demand, and it would be four more years before San Francisco struck another wheat penny. Even worn examples carry an estimated collector value of $100+, and fakes are common, so study the mint mark carefully. Check the date on every old wheat cent you find. In 2019 the West Point Mint did something it had never done — it struck quarters for circulation. Just 2 million of each of the five designs carried the W mint mark and were mixed into general circulation. Collectors hunted them in pocket change and rolls for months. Flip any 2019 quarter and check the mint mark spot. This post is for educational purposes only.

In 1864, a new two-cent piece became the first U.S. coin to carry the words In God We Trust. The motto came from rising religious sentiment during the Civil War, suggested by Reverend M.R. Watkinson. The two-cent piece only lasted until 1873, but the motto lived on — appearing on nearly every U.S. coin since. Check the ribbon above the shield on any 1864 two-cent piece.
