We Made History

Today in US Presidential History:

1803 - Future First Lady Sarah Whitsett Childress (later Polk) was born on a plantation outside of Murfreesboro, TN - the third of four surviving children of Elizabeth Whitsett Childress and Joel Childress, a prominent planter, merchant, and land speculator.

Her father strongly believed in equal opportunities for all of his children, and as a result Sarah and her older sister Susan were extensively educated for girls of the time period. They received private lessons from the principal of the all-boys’ Bradley Academy, and made the 500-mile trip to attend the exclusive Moravian Female Academy in Salem, NC. Sarah was also exposed to the mechanisms of politics at an early age through her family’s connections to local lawmakers, including Andrew Jackson.

Any help would be nice... I am hitting a wall finding anything about my great grandmother on my father's side. Her name was Elaine (Ramsey?) Sheppard Wingrove. She was the first wife of John C. Sheppard, Sr. Her sister went by T***s. Anyone know anything?
Hi! If I am on the GAP Trail, will the Whitsett House be obvious to me as I pass through?
Does anyone know where house 37 was located in Whitsett back in around 1915?
How cool is THIS!! I was just looking at pics of Whitsett (where I spent a lot of my childhood) to pass the time, while I'm working, & came across this pic of my Grandparents, AWSOME!!!
My Uncle is John “Sonny” Seruga...he was 88 in August. I just found this page and he sure loved hearing all the names from Whitsett. If there is anyone who remembers him, please feel free to get in touch.
