Gideon Vardi is bringing his solo abstract exhibition to TDYCC from August 15th. It will be on display through September 25th. It is in the TDYCC Dance Studio. The Theodore D. Young Community Center is on Manhattan Ave in the Fairview neighborhood of Greenburgh.

Greenburgh needs a recycling drop off center like Scarsdale--the DPW Commission is receptive to the idea of having one at our DPW facility .
Yesterday, the Greenburgh Public Works Department made lots of residents happy by opening up their highway dept facilities to residents to drop off bulk items for recycling. When I stopped off at the event I was impressed with how organized the recycling day was and how helpful all our DPW employees are to residents. We have had similar recycling days in recent years at our DPW facility.

The success of this day highlights the need to do what the Village of Scarsdale has done by making recycling convenient during the week.

Scarsdale operates their recycling center at 110 Secor Road. Residents can bring many materials that are difficult or impossible to put at the curb. The Scarsdale model is sensible because residents don’t have to wait for a particular collection day to dispose of recyclable materials properly. Scarsdale also accepts items through separate streams including books, cooking oil, corks, electronics, eyeglasses, paint, plastic bags and film, scrap metal, textiles, organic food waste and more.

Scarsdale also encourages reuse – not just recycling. They have a take it or leave it program that allows usable household goods to be diverted from the waste stream and made available for reuse.
When government provides a convenient place to bring unusual items there is a better chance it will be recycled.

Scarsdale even has added programs such as plastic film recycling rather than treating recycling as simple bottles, cans and paper.

On Thursday I spoke with Commissioner of Public Works Frank Morabito about establishing our own Greenburgh Recycling and Reuse Center at our DPW garage location on Old Sprain Road off of Ridge Road.. He was very receptive to the proposal and when I saw him at the recycling day yesterday – he already identified a location at our DPW facility! This would be a great initiative for the town to implement—and will be very popular with residents.

There are other benefits: The county of Westchester charges for disposal of waste by the ton but the county does not charge for recyclable materials. Reducing the amount of waste will reduce our disposal charges.

Drop Off or Pick Up Items at the Recycling Shed

The Greenburgh Building Department inspected the new Best Buy in Hartsdale and gave the new store a thumbs up to open today, August 14.. The Best Buy in Hartsdale is located at 393 N Central Ave and their opening is at 10 AM on Friday August 14th. The new location sits right near the upcoming Sprouts Farmers Market in the same shopping area. Sprouts is hoping to open their market on September 4th. Two great businesses that will serve our community. Thrilled they have chosen Greenburgh for their new stores.

This summer, they made a lasting impact by contributing to our Recycling & Waste Management Survey, supporting Grid Rewards outreach, helping make our July 25 Repair Café a success, keeping our social media up to date, assisting with the community information session, and so much more.

Christopher Lin, a rising senior at at Edgemont High School, is an exceptional student intern working in my office. His assignment: developing a local drone ordinance for the town. An avid drone enthusiast, Chris met with the Greenburgh Town Board last week to discuss a draft local law he wrote. Link to the video is below

Given that drones are becoming increasingly more common, proper local-level regulations are crucial to ensure public safety and privacy. Working with Town Supervisor Feiner, Chris researched civilian drone laws at all levels of government, contacted other New York municipalities that have established drone laws, and written a policy report for the Town of Greenburgh. He is currently revising a draft ordinance (Chapter 344) and hope to work with Town officials to refine and pass said ordinance.

Summary/highlights:

The proposed ordinance expands the current drone restrictions from town parks to all town facilities. Additionally, it establishes a permit system allowing both recreational and commercial drone operators to launch and land from town facilities (including parks) after the approval of a permit application. The ordinance also establishes much-needed definitions, standards for permits, exemptions, enforcement capabilities, and penalties. Extensive research was conducted during consideration of the scope of the ordinance to ensure that it would not be preempted by federal and state regulations.

It is my hope that the Town Board will be in a position to enact a local law addressing this important matter this year. Chris, who will be appointed to our Police Community Advisory Board as a student representative, will be asking that Board to review his proposed law in the near future before the Town Board enacts the legislation. Greenburgh is fortunate to have so many talented students like Chris who already are having an important positive impact on our community.

Future leaders of Greenburgh mentoring session tomorrow (Monday August 10) at 7 PM, Town Hall

Want to be a future leader of Greenburgh? Every month I meet with residents –Democrats, Republicans, Independents- who want to get involved but don’t know how.

On Monday, August 10th we will meet at Greenburgh Town Hall at 7 PM to about 8:30 PM.

The topic: legislative advocacy. Tips on how to get government officials to listen to you and act on your suggestions, concerns.

The future leaders of Greenburgh initiative is designed to encourage younger residents in their 20s-early 40s to get involved but is open to anyone.

An excellent program to attend if you want to

Attend meetings of any legislative body to express your ideas, concerns;
Participate or form a neighborhood associations;
Be appointed to advisory or policy making boards at the local, county, state or federal levels;
Run for office.

Some of our Greenburgh summer interns had the opportunity to host their own cable TV shows. In this video two interns, Marc & Kim interviewed artists Jeannie Yun and Paul Greco who exhibited their celebration of color show at the Greenburgh Library. The Greenburgh Library is more than a place to read books. Their art gallery features the exceptional work of talented local artists. The artists exhibited their work during the months of June and July.
