July is Disability Pride Month. This designation began as a way to commemorate the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in July 1990 by George H. W. Bush. On March 12, 1990, over 1,000 people marched from the White House to the U.S. Capitol to demand that Congress pass the Americans with Disabilities Act. That day, about 60 activists demonstrated the inaccessibility of public spaces by getting out of their wheelchairs or setting aside their mobility aids and crawling up the Capitol steps in an act of civil disobedience that later became known as the Capitol Crawl. Disability Pride Month celebrates people with disabilities, their identities, their culture, their contributions to society and seeks to end the stigma of disability by promoting the belief that disability is a natural part of human diversity in which people living with disabilities can celebrate and take pride. This photo shows members of the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA). WDSRA provides inclusion services for recreation programs for children and adults with disabilities and the Wheaton Park District became a founding member in 1976. Our next feature for our Discovering DuPage series is Darien Historical Society www.darienilhistory.org and the Old Lace Schoolhouse and Museum. The Darien Historical Society was formed in 1974, five years after the City of Darien was incorporated, to preserve local history and acquired the use of Old Lace School as its museum shortly after it was founded. The museum was officially dedicated on July 4, 1976, after some renovations were completed. The story of Darien begins in the 1830s with the settlement of two communities, Cass and Lace, which became the city of Darien. The mission of DHS is to collect and preserve archives and artifacts relating to the history of Darien and to serve as a resource for students, educators, historians, genealogists, and other interested persons. Located at the northwest corner of 75th Street & Cass Avenue, 7422 Cass Avenue, in Darien, the Old Lace Schoolhouse and Museum is open to the public on the first and third Sunday of every month, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. For more information, please visit their website https://darienilhistory.org/

Happy Throwback Thursday! In this hot summer heat, we are longingly remembering all the fun days spent at Northside pool over the years. The pool opened to the public on July 14, 1928, and over 2,000 bathers visited during its first week. It has been a summertime community staple ever since! This photo was taken at Northside pool circa the 1970s.

Today is Juneteenth or Freedom Day. This date was chosen to honor Major General Gordon Granger’s final order to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War on June 19, 1865, almost two years after Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation, effectively ending the institution of slavery in the United States. Although the holiday has been celebrated by black communities for a long time, Juneteenth became a federally recognized in 2021. Today, many will celebrate African American Independence, heritage, and resilience.
