Wexford Bayne Road. We learned about Wexford, but WHO WAS Bayne?

There are many Baynes in the history of North Hills, but we can assume from the other dignitaries of the day that it was Thomas McKee Bayne (1836 – 1894) after whom the roads are named. Bayne served the nation as an officer in the Civil War and a Republican Congressman from Bellevue, attended Westminster College and was elected as district attorney for Allegheny County from 1870-1874.

He was the first editor of the Evening Penny Press which eventually became the Pittsburgh Press. He named Ingomar for the famous play, Ingomar the Barbarian. Tragically, he shot himself to death two days following his 58th birthday out of grave concern over his diminishing quality of life due to lung hemorrhaging he was experiencing. He died in Washington, D.C., but is interred at Uniondale Cemetery.
