WHO WAS...

Newman Stadium is synonymous with NA sports, but who was Newman?

Dr. Carl A. Newman (1920-2007) was superintendent of North Allegheny School District from 1966-1981. He lead the district during the NASH construction, but the stadium was a late addition. It was not built with the rest of the school because residents raised concerns over tax increases.

Before coming to NASD, he worked in the school districts of Pitcairn, Monroeville-Pitcairn and Gateway.

Borough of Bradford Woods is the smallest municipality in the North Allegheny School District and also was the last established. Settlers seeking farm land cam e in the early 1800s, but growth was slow. With the arrival of the Harmony Short Line in 1908, the area's appeal as an ideal rustic location for summer homes away from the smokey city began to take hold. The North Pittsburgh Realty Company purchased lots and advertised the modern mode of access to the city and a glamorous "country life". People came for the summers and stayed. These ads do sound pretty convincing!

In 1915, residents petitioned the court to separate from Marshall Township and became the Borough of Bradford Woods.

We had such a great time last night going back to 1986 to celebrate Ross Park Mall's 40th birthday!

This shovel is from the groundbreaking in 1985 and the poster celebrates the grand opening ceremony from August 15-17, 1986.
