A Celebration of Fiber Arts, Heritage, and Sustainability
Join us for a village-wide celebration of heritage fiber arts and contemporary crafts. Enjoy demonstrations and hands-on activities in embroidery, weaving, quilting, knitting, crochet, lace tatting, basketry, rug hooking, and more—plus family-friendly fun like a Stuffed Animal Repair Hospital, food vendors, and artisan booths. The museum will host a first-floor open house featuring our new exhibit, Rugs: Fiber Art Under Foot.

Edna Shattuck Longe. The Shattuck family is well represented in the Weston genealogy - referenced almost 250 times and marrying or marrying into almost every founding family of Weston and surrounding area.Our Shattuck lineage starts with Parker Shattuck born in Temple, NH in 1777. He and his wife Sarah had 10 children - five boys and five girls between 1797 and 1820. Andrew was the youngest. Edna, b. 1878, was the daughter of Andrew Shattuck and Abbie Taylor.... As a note, at least three of the Longe men married Shattuck women (Emma, Edna and Eva - love the alliteration of that.)

From Raymond Taylor Albums - This one mostly people. This is an original and colorized picture of Etta Moore - the sepia tone photo is labeled Etta Moore sister of Obed (if I read that correctly) - think Obed Moore Road (up off Burton Road). Problem is I can find Obed Moore in the genealogy of Weston - first son of Ephraim and Mary (Rawson) Moore...but none of the sisters is listed as "Etta" but there is an Ester (born 1870). Beautiful pictures.

Vermont Women in the Civil War by Howard Coffin

Saturday, August 29th at 2:00 PM, Old Parish Church in Weston!

“Vermont women enlisted for the duration.” So said a Vermont historian assessing the war years of 1861-1865.

Vermont’s remarkable Civil War battlefield record is well documented: breaking the flank of Pickett’s Charge, the great stand at Wilderness, the climatic assault at Petersburg.

But little is known of how Vermont women sustained the home front. With nearly 35,000 of the state’s able-bodied men at war, the monumental tasks of keeping more than 30,000 farms in operation became very much a female enterprise.

And women took the place of men in factories and worked after hours making items needed by the soldiers. A Vermont woman edited anti-slavery newspapers, and others spoke against slavery. Also, Vermont women served as nurses in the state’s military hospitals and in the war zone, and taught newly-freed slaves in the South.

This story is told in their words, from letters and diaries that describe life during the Civil War in the Green Mountain State. And at least one Vermont woman appears to have secretly enlisted and fought in a Vermont regiment.

Howard Coffin is a 7th generation Vermonter, noted author and historian. He has spoken here several times over the years.

Raymond Taylor PostCard Album: Top: Glebe Mountain (Magic Mountain Ski Area) from Weston...I'd have to explore a map to see where this is viewing from (Morgan Hill?)...anyway, probably a "lost" view due to forest now - early photo, can see how few trees were there then. Bottom: View from Markham Mountain - towards the West/Northwest- if you blow up the photo you can make out the Green and buildings of the Village...but the quality is too poor to see clearly. Still beautiful vistas.

Raymond Taylor PostCard Album - Top: "Ludlow Mountain..." perhaps Terrible Mountain by another name - I've not heard "Ludlow Mountain" used before...maybe someone knows. Looks like Terrible to me. Bottom: Bird's Eye View of Weston. You have to enlarge it, but you'll get the perspective if you do. In the lower right corner you can see the "steeple" of the old Congregational church (I think) with the Green in front. Probably from the 1920's/30's? See how few trees there are compared to now.

Raymond Taylor PostCard Album: Top - "Antiques Room" in the Community Hall - a museum display set up before the Farrar-Mansur House was fully remodeled and furnished ... many off these items are now in the FM House.... Bottom - Main Street with "Post Office" (now the Gallery) and the Parkhurst Store after the 1907 rebuild.
