It is time for the January Research #TipOfTheMonth!

How to find birth records in South Carolina:

South Carolina did not require birth certificates until January 1, 1915. These records are held by the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) and are closed for 100 years. The Archives has birth certificates for 1915 and 1916 available through the South Carolina Electronic Records Archive (SCERA). For information on obtaining birth certificates after 1916 visit: https://scdhec.gov/vital-records/birth-certificates

For births prior to 1915, the Archives has some state and individual county records for the City of Aiken, the City of Charleston, the City of Spartanburg, Barnwell County, Greenville County, and Horry County. Census records can also be useful tools in trying to find a person's year of birth.

To access the 1915 and 1916 birth certificates through SCERA visit: http://e-archives.sc.gov/search-birth-certificates/

For questions, contact the SCDAH at [email protected]

In January 2018, Oconee County will celebrate its 150th birthday!
In January of 1868, the Pickens District was divided, and Oconee County was created, with Walhalla being named the County seat. The name Oconee comes from the Cherokee word “Ae-quo-nee” meaning land beside the water. Oconee was a Cherokee town situated along the main British/Cherokee trading path between Charleston and the Mississippi River.

The Oconee County Sesquicentennial committee wants YOUR input on how to celebrate our 150th! We are discussing options and would love to hear your ideas. Please take a few minutes and let us know what you want to see in 2018.

All ideas are welcome!

Submissions should describe events that can occur in 2018, and should be sent by Friday, June 2, 2017 to the Oconee Parks, Recreation & Tourism office, 1099 South Cove Road, Seneca, SC 29672 or emailed to [email protected].
More information about the Sesquicentennial will be announced in the coming months.
