From our collection:
A photograph of the interior of a notebook kept by Dr. J. J. Weaver, Sr. while a student at Pennsylvania College, Medical Department. The notebook contains detailed lecture notes and diagrams. One the endpaper, Dr. Weaver signed his name, date and the location of the college, Philadelphia, and included a sketch of an eagle. Donated to the Society by Margaret Whittlesey Werling in 1997.

Our site states…
Notebook. Kept by Dr. J. J. Weaver, Sr., marbled paper cover in black and gold, black leather spine binding and corners, 7.75" x 5.25" x 1", entries made in written black ink and pencil, May, 1845 - Jan. 1846.
Dr. Jacob J. Weaver, Sr. used this notebook from May, 1845- January, 1846, while a student at Pennsylvania College, Medical Department. He received his medical degree in March, 1846. The notebook contains detailed lecture notes and diagrams. One the endpaper, Dr. Weaver signed his name, date and the location of the college, Philadelphia, and included a sketch of an eagle.
Dr. J.J. Weaver, Sr., born in Gettysburg in 1822, established his medical practice in 1848 in Uniontown in Carroll County, Maryland. In 1859, he purchased a property at 3406 Uniontown Road where he resided and operated his medical practice until 1880.

A photograph of an admission ticket to Pennsylvania Medical College, First Course on Medical Chemistry by Washington L. Atlee, M.D. Donated to the Society by Margaret Whittlesey Werling in 1997.

Ticket. Admission to Pennsylvania Medical College, First Course on Medical Chemistry by Washington L. Atlee, M.D., for Mr. J. J. Weaver, white card 3.75" x 4.75", with black printing, validated in black ink, with a depiction of cherub by A. Koellner, 1844-45.
Papers of Jacob J. Weaver, Sr. while attending the Pennsylvania College Medical Department, in Gettysburg; he graduated in 1846.

A photograph of an admission ticket to the University of Maryland Faculty of Physic, "Obstetrics", by G. W. Miltenberger, M.D. Donated to the Society by Margaret Whittlesey Werling in 1997.

Admission ticket, University of Maryland, Faculty of Physic, "Obstetrics", by G. W. Miltenberger, M.D., for Mr. J. J. Weaver (Jr.), white card with black printing, 3.25" x 5.25", validated in black ink, Fall 1869.
In the early 1800s, medical students didn’t pay one tuition. Instead, they bought tickets to individual lectures. These tickets acted as both receipts and proof of attendance for graduation.
This ticket was used by Dr. J.J. Weaver, Jr., who graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1869. He then went into practice with his father in Uniontown until his retirement in 1889.
The lecture on obstetrics was a common one by 1869 as academically trained doctors increasingly delivered babies.

A photograph of a pipe stand of molded redware painted gold over the original black paint, which belonged to John Wesley Cole of Westminster. Donated to the Society by Virginia J. Williams in 1992.

Our site states…
Pipe stand, molded redware, figure of a barefoot boy seated beside circular pipe receptacle formed of to***co leaves; smaller receptacle for matches or ashes resembles stump. Oval base. Incised mark on underside "327/L&C". Painted gold over original black paint.
Belonged to John Wesley Cole of Westminster. Donor is Cole's granddaughter. John Wesley Cole was born sometime around 1835. Records indicate that he was a resident of a free black enclave near New Windsor, just over the Carroll County line in Frederick County at the intersection of what is now MD Routes 97 and 26. On August 4, 1863, Cole enlisted in the Union Army. His company descriptive book indicated that he was: 20 years old; 5 feet, 6 inches tall; of brown complexion; and a farmer by occupation. He served as a private in Company F of the 4th Regiment, United States Colored Troops (USCT). Cole was wounded several times, including a bayonet wound, two different wounds from shell fragments, and a bullet wound. One source indicates that Cole was “absent from wounds recd at Dutch Gap Va. August 28/64.” On June 8, 1865, Cole was mustered out in Baltimore.
Upon returning to Carroll County, Cole joined the Thaddeus Stevens Grand Army of the Republic Post in New Windsor. He married in January of 1868. His wife’s name was Charlotte. By the 1880s Federal Census, the 45-year-old veteran was a farm laborer, living in a rented house in Westminster on Charles Street. 20 years later, Cole’s census data indicated that he had his own income and that his wife was a laundress. He died on March 3, 1921 and was buried in Ellsworth Cemetery.

Drawing, ink and watercolor. Image of a city block at dusk, with rows of stores and row houses on a hill, with more buildings on the horizon. A milkman in a green uniform walks along the lower right hand side. Signed Leonard LeVee ‘53 in lower left hand corner. 12”x16”. Frame added in March 2026.
Framed and UvF glass added by Gallery 99- Aint that a Frame in Westminster, MD Feb 2026 for exhibition.
