A set of knitting instructions for a man's "V" neck sleeveless sweater for the U.S. Servicemen during World War 2. Donated to the Society by Sophia Jean Hall in 2024.

Evelyn Jackson Mather (1908-1968) served a Chairman of Production for the Carroll County Chapter of the American Red Cross during World War 2. She coordinated volunteer efforts to produce materials for the war effort, including knitting sweaters for US Servicemen. Mather was a public schoolteacher and public librarian, later head librarian at Davis Library in Westminster.

Our next Box Lunch Talk: The Greek Families of Westminster, presented by Antigoni Ladd will be on Tuesday, October 20, noon, on the HSCC Campus (210 E. Main Street).

As always, there is no registration for Box Lunch Talks. You bring your lunch, and we provide the drinks and desserts (thanks to our volunteers and staff). We will be holding a nonperishable food drive for Carroll Food Sunday. If you bring a nonperishable item to the October or November Box Lunch Talks, you get in FREE to the talk. If you choose not to bring a food item, the cost is only $3 for HSCC members and $5 for nonmembers.

A black and white print of a large clapboard mill built into the side of a hill, the Trevanion Mill Carroll County, MD.

Our site states…
Print, photographic. B/W photo of a large clapboard mill built into the side of a hill. The lowest level of the mill is stone and has two windows on the side facing the photographer. The first and second floor have two windows on each side of a center door. The third level has a center door with two windows on each side but they are smaller than the ones on the lower floors. Above the third floor are three windows, the center one is circular. There are two chimneys on the roof directly above the these windows as well. Standing in the second floor door is a boy hoisting something upwards using the pulley at the top. The item he is lifting has just been lifted out of a horse drawn wagon sitting in front of the lowest level. The right side of the mill is visible too. The first and second floors both have four windows across. There is a man sitting on a bench in front of the first floor. Trees are on the outskirts of the photo, framing the area where the mill is built. Photo: 3" x 4.75"

A black and white postcard of the New Windsor city jail, the publisher being Repp Bros. Donated to the Society by Carroll County Commissioners in 1955.

Postmarked Oct 23, 19??; has cancelled 1 cent stamp. Addressed to Miss M.B. Shellman Westminster MD 206 East Main; message on back reads "I send you today Tuesday, 3 sacks potatoes. The freight charges are paid to Westminster. Too bad that it rained. Sorry we could not be there. Jim."

A black and white photograph of 5 rows of school children and 2 female teachers from October, 1905, from the Woodbine School. Donated to the Society by Lillie Hatfield in 1975.

Print, photographic. B/W studio portrait of young woman, head and shoulders. Wearing a striped dress, high collar, large shoulders. Written on back in ink: Anna L. Weant.
Annie L. Weant was born in October, 1875, in Carroll County, Maryland, the daughter of John Washington and Hannah Elizabeth Miller Weant. She married Charles Clayton Eyler, son of John W. and Lydia A. Hampt Eyler. They had no children. Annie passed away February 4, 1930, from the effects of appendicitis, and was buried in Haugh's Church Cemetery, Ladiesburg, Frederick County, Maryland.

An oil pastel portrait by artist Frederick Kemmelmeyer of Evan Lloyd Crawford (1779-1861) who is wearing an officers uniform from the War of 1812.

Our site states…
Portrait, oil pastel. Painted by artist Frederick Kemmelmeyer (c. 1760-1821) c. 1812-1814. Depicts a 3/4 bust view of a clean shaven man with blue eyes, light skin and curly brown hair tied back with a black ribbon. Subject is wearing an officers uniform from the War of 1812, dark blue wool coat with silver tasseled epaulettes and a high red collar with silver button details with black neck tie and cravat. White sash present on chest with silver monogrammed "ELC" badge. Simple background of blue and yellow shaded hues.
From the Maryland Center for History and Culture's catalog record: "Evan Lloyd Crawford (1779-1861) was born in Frederick, Maryland. His Pennsylvanian father, David Crawford, was one of the original settlers and founders of New Windsor, Carroll County. Evan married Isabelle Smith (1782-1857) in Baltimore on December 26th, 1811. Based on his appearance in this portrait, he served in the Maryland Militia in the War of 1812. The couple had at least seven children, and lived much of their lives on the family farm in Carroll County, a 177.5 acre property purchased in October 1816. He was a key supporter and appointed committee member for the establishment of Carroll County, a movement that was voted down or defeated in the legislature several times before finally being accepted in 1837. As an active member of his county, he was appointed to sit on the first trial jury in Carroll County history (1837). Records indicate that he was then appointed U.S. Postmaster for the "Waterloo" office, which was then in Carroll County, now Howard County. In 1851, Evan ran for local office as Primary School Commissioner, but came in last place among the four candidates. He died in 1861 at his home in Franklinville, Carroll County, Maryland, which was located about midway between present day Winfield and Unionville.
