Just over the Westbrook line, this was a special place for many local families. A trip here with parents, grandparents, siblings, and friends created memories that have lasted for decades. Looking back at this photo brings many of those moments rushing back.

If you could walk through the door one more time today, what would you order?

Early Westbrook was home to a number of photographers who documented the people and places of our growing community. Gooding Photographers was located on Main Street around 1888, Wight Studios operated on Fitch Street circa 1900, and Poisson maintained a studio on Bridge Street. The largest and most prominent of these businesses was Marshall Studio, founded and operated by Ed Marshall in the early 1920s. Marshall’s life came to an end on November 26, 1937, the day after Thanksgiving, at the age of 64. Yet the studio he built continued to serve the community for nearly another 35 years, preserving countless images of Westbrook residents, families, businesses, and events, and leaving behind an invaluable photographic record of the city’s history.

John Clark standing in front of his store located at the corner of Bridgton Road (Route 302) and Brook Street. Following his death, his daughter, Inez Clark Hawkes, and her husband, Maurice Hawkes, were both tragically killed at the same location, four years apart, in 1922 and 1926.

The Westbrook Maine Historical Society remembers the late Philip Laviolette for his generous donation of his Veterans Military Collection — the result of more than 40 years of dedicated research. His work includes over 30 large volumes filled with detailed information on local veterans.

Whether browsing or conducting research, these volumes remain a true gold mine of historical information.

In addition, Phil also donated many artifacts that are on display in our military section.

Phil was also the curator and museum director of the Saint Hyacinth Catholic Church Museum on Walker Street in Westbrook, which has since closed its doors.

Phil passed away on April 6, 2009, but his efforts and lifelong body of work continue to serve and inspire.

Thanks to individuals like Phil and the continued interest of community members, the history of our local veterans and citizens remains preserved and accessible for future generations.
