DEN OTCŮ 🍻
Je to svátek na počest otců, oslavující otcovství, vztah otce k dítěti a roli otců ve společnosti. V mnoha zemích včetně České republiky se slaví třetí neděli v červnu, v některých státech se ale tradičně váže ke svátku sv. Josefa (19. března), či ještě k různým jiným datům.

"Dokud ti otec hladí vlas a matka líbá líce,
toť nejkrásnější čas, jenž nevrátí se více."

Tradici oslavy otců založila Američanka Sonora Smart Doddová, která chtěla ocenit úsilí, s nímž se o ni a další čtyři sourozence staral její ovdovělý tatínek. Úplně první oslava Dne otců se konala v americkém městečku Spokane ve státě Washington 19. června 1910, v den narozenin Sonořina otce. První oslava Dne otců tak byla spíše soukromá, popularita svátku ale rychle rostla. V roce 1966 se díky prezidentovi Lyndonu Johnsonovi stala třetí červnová neděle oficiálně Dnem otců. Tradiční dárek na Den otců bývaly doutníky, kravaty a další pánské zboží.

It’s always a great day at the museum when we’re visited by local residents!

In the 11 years since the museum opened, we’ve welcomed more than 22,000 visitors. It’s amazing, though, how many people from our own community still haven’t had the opportunity to walk through our front doors.

If you haven’t visited yet, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what you’ll discover. Our museum is here today because of the vision of those who recognized the importance of preserving our area’s history, along with the dedication of the volunteers who continue to keep our doors open.

As always, we encourage anyone interested in volunteering to join us. Whether you can spare just a few hours each month or bring fresh ideas for future exhibits and programs, we’d love to have you as part of our team.

A special thank you to Peyton and Chandler, who have promised to return—and bring their husbands along next time! (LOL.) Thank you also to Evelyn for stopping by with some wonderful donations.

Don’t forget to visit our temporary exhibit, on display through September, commemorating the 250th birthday of our nation. While you’re here, be sure to enjoy the ever-growing Decades of Wedding Dresses exhibit as well.

ATTENTION WEST and SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES - AMERICA WILL TURN 250 YEARS OLD IN A FEW WEEKS - LETS GET TOGETHER AND HAVE SOME FUN!
The West Police Department with assistance from friends and neighbors will be hosting a Golf-cart/UTV Train to celebrate our Nation's 250th birthday on July 4th - only three Saturdays away.
We will meet at the VFW Post 4819 West, TX or Westfest RV Field right next to the Post on South Reagan Street - Saturday July 4th at 10am - we will pull out around 10:30am and cruise North on Reagan in a follow the leader style procession. The route will not be as long as our annual Christmas Train and we will likely only cross Oak Street once - but we will drive through the West Rest Haven parking lot for our Seniors to enjoy and end the route at the City Park (Parker's Park). At the park we can enjoy hotdogs (maybe some sausage wraps) and cold water. We hope many of you out there will join us and many others can enjoy as we cruise by. Flying Old Glory will be the standard - but feel free to decorate as much or little as you would like. I will likely being playing my patriotic-music too loud - so forgive me in advance.

This event is FREE and open to the public! Come enjoy this annual event coordinated by the West Chamber of Commerce!
