West Des Moines Historical Society

West Des Moines Historical Society The mission of the Society is to educate, to preserve, and to promote the heritage and history of West Des Moines.

The West Des Moines Historical Society owns and maintains two historic properties in West Des Moines, the Jordan House and Bennett School. The idea of establishing a historical society for the City of West Des Moines was conceived in 1968 as plans were made for the city’s Diamond Jubilee. Two years later, in 1970, the West Des Moines Historical Society was formed. To this end, the Society purchas

ed the Jordan House in 1978. Through the efforts of the Society, the business community and the volunteer organizations of West Des Moines, the dream of transforming Jordan house into a museum became a reality. The major initial restoration was completed in 1993, the centennial year of West Des Moines. Since that time the West Des Moines Historical Society has also acquired and restored the Bennett School, the last one room school houses built and used in West Des Moines. These two facilities together with the growing collections of memoribilia and historical information form the core of the West Des Moines Historical Society’s collection. If you have knowledge of significant events in West Des Moines, pictures from the past, or historical items relating to West Des Moines we would love to hear from you. If you have only time, we are always looking for volunteers and can help you with that too – and you’ll get a lot of enjoyment out of it. In either event please contact us using the information below.

What's Blooming: Washington Astilbe

Washington Astilbe is lighting up the shade garden with elegant white plumes that seem to float above deep green foliage.

A favorite for brightening darker corners, it brings graceful texture, cool color, and a touch of old-fashioned charm to the early summer garden.

Shade-loving. Moisture-appreciating. Proof that the brightest flowers don't always need the spotlight.

A meaningful way to help the Jordan House, plus the Polk County Master Gardeners are great teachers!

Check out this old picture of the Jordan House taken in August of 1979. This was just after the WDMHS had taken possession of the house to begin its restoration. Do you notice what is missing? Come take a tour and see what she looks like today!

Beardtongue and lungwort... why do so many pretty plants have weird names?

What’s Blooming: Lungwort

Lungwort is quietly brightening the shade garden with clusters of delicate blooms floating above silver-speckled foliage that almost looks hand-painted.

One of spring’s earliest pollinator plants, it brings soft color, woodland charm, and a welcome nectar source for emerging bees.

Sweet-looking. Surprisingly hardy. Thrives where drama queens refuse.

Today's is a large & heavy family bible in our collection at the Jordan House! Beyond their religious significance, bibles served as primary genealogical archives, recording births, marriages and deaths for generations before the government required that paperwork. For African Americans, they may be the only documentation that their enslaved ancestors existed beyond bills of sale, wills or property lists, which often only included first names.

Now imagine you're a pioneer, preparing to set across the country on the Oregon Trail. Space in your wagon is limited, and you have to justify every pound you bring. You have to choose- bring the bible or bring food? You'll have the chance to make this decision at the Heritage Jubilee Saturday, October 3 as you "Pack Your Wagon" for the Oregon Trail.

Good job Sally Kay & Marilyn Septer Coleman for your accurate guesses!
