The Norton Museum of Art is internationally known for its distinguished permanent collection featuring American Art, Chinese Art, Contemporary Art, European Art and Photography. Its masterpieces of 19th century and 20th century painting and sculpture include works by Brancusi, Gauguin, Matisse, Miró, Monet, Picasso, Davis, Hassam, Hopper, Manship, O'Keeffe, Pollock and Sheeler. In just two weeks, enter a dreamlike world in “Gertrude Abercrombie: The Whole World Is a Mystery” 🐈‍⬛ 🖼️

This exhibition is the first nationally touring retrospective of Gertrude Abercrombie’s work. This enigmatic artist created surreal works set in a world of her own. Even her self-portrait, pictured here, has a dreamy quality to it, as she finds the peculiar in everyday life.

Norton Favorites: The Teen Collective and Carlos Mérida ❤️

Hear from our Teen Collective members about their favorite works from a recently installed suite of prints by Carlos Mérida. These works come from the artist’s series called “Dances of Mexico” and “Carnival in Mexico.” Our Teen Collective members loved the variation in style and color across these prints, which share moments of Mexican culture and its carnival.

For Indigenous Peoples' Day, we wanted to look at these black-on-black ceramics by Maria Martinez and Santana Roybal Martinez ❤️

Maria Martinez and Santana Roybal Martinez created these works together; both were Tewa potters of the San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico. The artistic partnership between mother and daughter-in-law would produce many ceramic works. Maria usually shaped and polished these vessels, and Santana painted the designs on them.

While the Tewa people had created pottery for centuries, Maria built on this tradition around 1918 by using black paint on black ceramic. Uniting the artistic traditions of their heritage with innovations of their time, these works highlight their continued legacy and influence on the culture of the present.

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s take a closer look at Gisela Colón’s “Morph (Elevation)” 💚

The Puerto Rican-born artist is known for her work in “organic minimalism,” utilizing high-tech materials like the blow-molded acrylic seen here. She often explores connections between nature and the human experience with her colorful, light-responsive sculptures that reflect themes of transformation, resilience, and renewal.

This work, titled "Morph (Elevation),” has an effect of shifting light and color that results in an uncanny glow. Depending on where you stand in relation to this sculpture, you'll see a different range of colors.

Looking back at the festivities from last week’s Nuestra Cultura Community Day! ❤️

Festivities included:
🗣️ Special tours in both Spanish and English
🎶 David Lucca y Los Clasicos playing 70s big-band salsa
🎨 Drop-in art workshops to create a milagro corazon and a vijigante mask
📚 A dual-language story time for the kids
🪩 Dance class with Jan Clancy, who taught the basics of bachata, merengue, and salsa
♥️ Dominoes with the Puerto Rican Cultural Society
🤝 Tables with community partners who showed how Hispanic, Latino, and Indigenous organizations in Palm Beach County are making a positive impact in our communities
🎤 A talk on archiving the stories of your loved ones with Wilkine Brutus
🎵 Puerto Rican percussion-based styles of bomba and plena with the band Plena Es
🎥 A viewing of the film “THEYDREAM”
🎧 Dancing with DJ Rumble
🍬 A piñata party for the kids

Did you know that all the artwork in this exhibition is made by local students? 🎨 📚

The exhibition "Stories Unfolded: Journey of the Imagination” features work by students in our Afterschool Arts Outreach (AAO) program as they explore the theme of storytelling. Led by our museum educators, these students explored working in a wide range of materials and techniques to create these artworks.

AAO has provided visual arts education to youth (ages 5 to 18) in under-resourced Palm Beach County communities since 1991. With weekly art classes, field trips to the Norton, and guest passes for participants and their families to visit the Museum, the program culminates in this annual exhibition.

TWO headlining exhibitions will be opening at the Norton this fall! 🌙 📸 🤔

On October 31, experience the uncanny worlds of two unique artists as we open two different exhibitions. “Blazing Light: Photographs by Mimi Plumb” examines the photographer’s contemplation of the anxieties imbued in contemporary American culture. “Gertrude Abercrombie: The Whole World Is a Mystery” explores the fantastical style of a lesser-known Surrealist painter.

Though these artists are incredibly different, you’ll find common themes between them. See “Blazing Light: Photographs by Mimi Plumb” and “Gertrude Abercrombie: The Whole World Is a Mystery” when they open at the Norton Museum of Art on October 31.

Norton Favorites: Jim and Paul Gauguin ❤️

Hear from one of our docents about how Paul Gauguin’s "Christ in the Garden of Olives” is one of his favorite works of art at the Museum. He shares that the work is actually a self-portrait of the artist, and that Gauguin used the scene to express his own emotions.

Come to the Norton tomorrow for our FREE Nuestra Cultura Community Day celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month! ❤️

Featuring Latin music, dance, art activities, and much more, this exciting festival celebrates the rich, diverse cultures from across South America, Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and our own communities.

There will be tours in English and Spanish, drop-in art workshops, and story time. You’ll enjoy playing dominoes, watching the film “TheyDream,” and learning about archiving family stories with Preserve Voices by Wilkine Brutus. You can listen to live music by David Lucca y Los Clasicos, Plena Es, Mariachi Pancho Villa, and DJ Rumble. Kids will love the piñata party, and all ages will love empanadas from The Restaurant inspired by a variety of Latin cultures. Plus, partners from Hispanic, Latino, and Indigenous organizations in Palm Beach County will share how they make a positive impact in our communities.
