What happens when you don’t have the context for a photograph? 📸

The exhibition “Cursed Images: Pictures Out of Context” attempts to answer this question. All these images are everyday snapshots. Who took them? We don’t really know. This exhibition is drawn from the Peter J. Cohen Collection, often sourced from estate sales or thrift stores. Though each snapshot probably meant a lot to the person who took it, we no longer know the context.

Without context, we might find these photos odd or uncanny, becoming what is called a “cursed image” in online slang. The ambiguity of these snapshots invites lingering questions, prompting viewers to consider how vernacular photographs circulate and endure over time.

Finding our way around with the help of some bedazzling ✨

We’ve seen a lot of tiny gemstone posts across the web this week, and we just had to hop on the trend. We hope you find it as fun as we did (see slide 4 for the mood while bedazzling), and that we’ve inspired you to get a little artsy. Head to the Norton to get your own blank map, and maybe do a little exploring while you’re at it.

P.S. Our social media manager asks you not to judge the state of her manicure.

She also tells us how the artist’s body of work inspires her in her own practice.

This work is on view as part of "Recognition of Art by Women: In Retrospect," which is on view until September 27. See this work on view during your next visit to the Museum, and follow along with us for more Norton Favorites!

See “Chang Dai-chien: A Master of Modern Chinese Painting” when it opens on August 29!

Chang Dai-chien was widely regarded as one of the most important Chinese painters of the 20th century. He balanced different styles, both as a master traditionalist and an innovative Modernist painter. The three works that will be on display demonstrate his deep engagement with the classical traditions of Chinese painting and calligraphy while also revealing his remarkable ability to reinterpret tradition for the modern era. For instance, this ink portrait of Li Bai, the celebrated eighth-century poet, shows one of Chang Dai-chien’s diverse approaches to brushwork.

Opening soon at the Norton. Learn more on our website.
