PICTURING THE ARTS — A SNEAK PEEK

This woodcut was made in 1549.

Pierre Eskrich — also known as Pierre Cruche, or Pierre Vase — was a French printmaker deeply embedded in the humanist circles of the Reformation. He worked in Lyon, fled the city under the Edict of Chateaubriand targeting Protestants, and eventually settled in Geneva. His images are both political and lyrical, charged with the tensions of a Europe in the middle of transforming itself.

This plate comes from an emblem book: a genre that paired images with moral principles, designed to be looked at slowly, read carefully, and kept. The subject is a dance master — and through him, an illustration of freedom. Movement as liberation. The body as argument.

At nearly 500 years old, it remains completely legible. That is what great graphic work does.

Picturing the Arts — Dance, Music, Theater, Literature, Fine Art, Photography — opens at Denenberg Fine Arts soon.

PICTURING THE ARTS — COMING SOON

We’re announcing an exhibition that has been years in the making.

Picturing the Arts brings together works from our collection united by a single subject: the arts themselves. Dance, music, theater, literature, fine art, photography — works in which artists turned their attention to other artists, other performers, other makers. The result is a collection that feels less like an inventory and more like a conversation across centuries.

We begin with this.

Tjomme Edzard de Vries painted himself at the easel in 1941, in the middle of the Second World War, in occupied Netherlands. He is not looking at us. He is looking at his canvas. The brush is extended. The palette is in hand. The world outside the studio is catastrophic; the world inside is entirely focused on the work.

De Vries published 24 books and is well collected in the Netherlands. This self-portrait — candid, revealing, and charmingly direct — is one of the most quietly powerful things in the exhibition.

Picturing the Arts opens at Denenberg Fine Arts soon. Details to follow.

Something has been missing from this page.

Denenberg Fine Arts has been in business since 1965. In that time we have placed important works into private and public collections across the country — drawings, paintings, sculpture, photographs — spanning five centuries of art history.

We’ve never been particularly loud about it.

That changes now. Starting this week, we’ll be using this page the way it should have been used all along: to share what we love about art, the stories behind the works in our gallery, and the people — collectors, artists, estates — who have shaped who we are.

Not every post will be about buying. Most will simply be about looking. But if something catches your eye along the way, we’re always reachable.

Welcome. There is a lot to show you.
