To celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day, we would like to highlight a piece by the Irish sculpture Kieran Tuohy called "Thank you to the Choctaw" (2005). This sculpture, carved from bog oak, commemorates the contribution of the Choctaw, an American Indian tribe, to famine relief in Ireland. In 1847 they raised and sent more than $170 — at the time a substantial sum, especially in light of their own needs. The Choctaw, like the Irish, had experienced land expropriation, resettlement, deprivation, and a stunning loss of life only 16 years earlier. U.S President Andrew Jackson seized their lands in Mississippi and forced their removal to Oklahoma. A 500-mile journey that resulted in the death of more than half their number, it became known as the Trail of Tears. Rising from a bed of stones, Tuohy’s sculpture depicts the strong arms of the Choctaw lifting up the suffering people of Ireland.
This work is currently on view , lent courtesy of Quinnipiac University in conjunction with Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum of Fairfield (.fairfield), which hopes to open a new permanent home in 2026-27 in a renovated space in Fairfield Connecticut.
