✨Artist Spotlight: Steven Whetstone ✨
If you know Steven Whetstone, you know this: beyond the long list of accolades, exhibitions, and awards, he is one of the most genuine and kind people in our creative community. And if you know his work—you know it’s nothing short of incredible.
A proud graduate of the University of South Carolina (BFA, Visual Arts), Steven has been creating powerful oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings professionally since 2003. His artistic spark was first ignited by inspiring teachers at Saluda River Elementary, Northside Middle, Brookland-Cayce High School, and the SC Governor’s School for the Arts, shaping the path that led him to where he is today.
For years, Steven worked in The Climb studio in downtown Columbia, where countless visitors came to appreciate his process up close. Today, he’s opened a space all his own: Steven Whetstone Fine Art Gallery, located at 324 State Street in West Columbia—a beautiful reflection of his dedication, vision, and deep roots in the Midlands arts community.
This year brought another major milestone: in October 2025, Steven was inducted into the Lexington District 2 Hall of Fame for Fine Arts, a well-deserved honor recognizing his impact as an artist, educator, and community leader.
His career highlights include representation with galleries across South Carolina, multiple solo and group exhibitions, features in Columbia Metropolitan Magazine, Free Times, USA Today Baseball Weekly, the SEC Network, and more. He has served as an educator, speaker, juror, and illustrator for the USC Football Hall of Captains for over three decades—always giving back to the next generation of artists.
And through all of it, Steven remains a constant: humble, generous, and steadfast in uplifting the arts in our region.
Stop by his gallery on State Street and experience his extraordinary work for yourself. West Columbia is lucky to have him—and so are we. 🎨✨
