CHAD, REVAN AND HAYDEN TIDWELL visited the Columbia Historical Museum Thursday, July 30th, to tour the museum and participate in the Brazoria County Summer Passport program. Museum Manager Sally Rueffer snapped this photo while showing the kids around the old First Capitol Bank building at 247 East Brazos Avenue in West Columbia, the current home of the museum. Today is the final day to get passports stamped at the Columbia Historical Museum, as closing ceremonies for the summer event will be held Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the Brazoria County Historical Museum in Angleton. Prizes will be handed out at Saturday's program in Angleton. For more information, contact the museum in West Columbia at (979) 345-6125. And get those passports stamped today between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at your local museum.

The Columbia Historical Museum is closing out the month of July with a free Story Time at the Rosenwald School. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to "Reading in the Rosenwald" at 10 a.m. Friday, July 31st. The Rosenwald School is located directly behind the museum at the intersection of Broad and Clay streets in West Columbia. The museum is at 247 East Brazos Avenue. There will be fun crafts and treats offered along with the reading of Tony Gemignani's "Tony and the Pizza Champions" by the museum board's vice president Misty Congdon. The reading starts at 10 a.m. so don't be late. The kids should love it!

Today is the 73rd anniversary of the signing of the Korean War Armistice agreement. The United Nations Command reached an armistice with China and North Korea on July 27, 1953, at Panmunjom, ending active hostilities between North and South Korea and established a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) along the 38th parallel. The Korean War Armistice Day created a ceasefire supervised by the Military Armistice Commission but did not produce a formal peace treaty. South Korea never signed the agreement due to President Syngman Rhee's objections.

The three years of fighting in Asia resulted in over a million combat casualties and close to the same number of civilian deaths. In modern days Americans can witness what a bloody mess the Korean War of 1950 to 1953 was on a daily basis by watching reruns of M*A*S*H on television.

A HOUSTON METHODIST CHURCH group visited the Columbia Historical Museum Thursday to tour the historical Rosenwald School and West Columbia’s museum at 247 East Brazos Avenue. Museum manager Sally Rueffer and volunteers Jo Frances Chastain, Pat Weeks, Mike Reid, Mary Holler and Tracy Gupton greeted the Houstonians and assisted with their visit.

BRING YOUR YOUNG CHILDREN to a free story time this morning at the historical Rosenwald School behind the Columbia Historical Museum. "Miss Nelson is Missing" by James Marshall will be read by museum board member Misty Congdon at 10 a.m. today, Friday, July 24, 2026. Don't be late! Treats will be available and the kids will be taught crafts as well. The West Columbia museum's "Reading in the Rosenwald" summer program will continue next Friday morning, July 31st, with another story scheduled to be read to the kiddoes! I have lived on a road in West Columbia that bears my name practically my entire life. And I didn't have to be a Heisman Trophy finalist to earn it. Gupton Lane used to be a dead end street where the most prominent residents on that road were the Gupton brothers--Buff and Phil. Buff, born Samuel Morris Gupton in 1886, and Phil Gupton were the sons of Samuel Doc and Dora Gupton, who owned most of the land surrounding the road in the late 1800s and on into the 20th century. So Gupton Lane it became when the City of West Columbia had to give a name to what was most likely a dirt road at that time.

Sunday evening the City of West Columbia hosted a dedication ceremony officially changing the name of North 17th Street to Cam Ward Way. And Cam himself was in town to handle the unveiling. The hometown hero, quarterback of the Tennessee Titans, is preparing for training camp in Nashville to kick off his sophomore season in the NFL in a week.
