Help out your local museum while gratifying your palate October 30th when the Columbia Historical Museum will be selling delicious pulled pork sandwiches with a bag of chips. Museum directors are planning BBQ sandwich sales in a drive-through station at the historic Rosenwald School's parking lot at the corner of Broad and Clay streets in West Columbia before the Roughnecks' final home game of the 2026 season. The Bay City Black Cats will be the Roughnecks' opponent the last Friday in October, which will be the final home game this year. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 7 p.m. The pulled pork sandwiches will be sold for $15 each beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, October 30th. Profits from the sales will benefit the museum's scholarship fund. Bayou Boys Catering, working with Quentin Fojtik of Damon, will be preparing the pulled pork sandwiches. Former Columbia Historical Museum President Naomi Smith informed me Saturday that her brother-in-law, former NFL great Jim Ray Smith, had passed away the day before in a Dallas-area hospital. He was 94. Known in West Columbia as "James Ray" when he was growing up and impressing college scouts with his performance in high school football, Smith was part of Columbia High School's inaugural group of inductees into the Roughnecks Athletics Hall of Honor in 2007.

James Ray Smith was an All American lineman for the Baylor Bears and went on to earn All Pro honors multiple times with the Cleveland Browns in the NFL. The West Columbian closed out his 9-year pro football career with the Dallas Cowboys in the early 1960s and remained a resident of the Dallas area for the rest of his long life. Although he lived to see his 94th birthday earlier this year, his passing this past weekend still is shocking to the Smith family and everyone who knew this popular, sweet big man!

The Hobby Area Travel Social Club toured the Columbia Historical Museum and its Rosenwald School Friday in West Columbia, Texas. Museum manager Sally Rueffer led the tour, assisted by volunteers Pat Weeks, Tracy Gupton, Jo Frances Chastain and Betty Eason.

FREE CHILDREN'S EVENT scheduled Saturday, October 3rd, at the historical Rosenwald School in West Columbia. The Columbia Historical Museum will have the Rosenwald School at the intersection of Broad and Clay streets open from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday for its "First Saturdays of the Month in the Rosenwald School" program. Bring your children to decorate their own pumpkins, learn about the history of the Jack-O-Lantern and enjoy some yummy fall treats. For more information, contact the museum at (979) 345-6125. VISITING THE COLUMBIA HISTORICAL MUSEUM Saturday, September 19th, were Bar-X Ranch residents Chelsea Ewald and her son, Kasen Ewald. Kasen is a seventh grader at West Brazos Junior High. Chelsea, a nurse, was interested in the physicians' display at the museum that she is posing in front of. Everyone is encouraged to drop by the museum at 247 East Brazos Avenue in West Columbia to take in the many exhibits and artifacts on display.
