Amazing Hoover history from Down Under!
Before becoming our 31st President, Herbert Hoover served as Superintendent of the Sons of Gwalia mine at Mt Leonora from May to November 1898. He and the miners lived in tents until permission was granted to build permanent structures.
As noted in 'Homes of the Hoovers' by Ruth Dennis and 'Historical sketches of Leonora and Gwalia' by Don and Donna Reid: 'Its construction was begun by Hoover, though he was transferred to China before the building was completed in 1899.'
A fascinating piece of presidential history in Australia's 'living ghost town' of Gwalia!
A woman with long ties to a faded gold rush town has moved in to help preserve its history for generations to come.
