MEET OUR JUNE ARTIST OF THE MONTH: SARAH FOX-WANGLER
From the historic fox farms of her childhood to her current high-energy, custom-built welding and art studio tucked deep into the woods of West Branch, Sarah Fox-Wangler’s life has been a brilliant, unpredictable fusion of fine art, rugged technology, and deep-rooted tradition. This month, the Fourth Street Gallery & Artisan Market is incredibly honored to showcase a creative force whose work completely redefines what mixed-media art can be.
Sarah’s story starts in Traverse City, raised by an artist mother and a software engineer father—a unique upbringing that beautifully blended boundless creativity with a hands-on love for tools, machinery, and structure. After earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from the University of Michigan, she spent time mastering the deliberate, precise edge of a professional tattoo artist. Today, alongside her husband and collaborative partner Gerry, she blends all of these worlds together right here in Northern Michigan.
Sarah is known for her provocative, "off the wall" mixed-media masterpieces. Her art is a high-octane exploration of myths, ancient legends, and forgotten history, frequently incorporating fascinating found objects like bone, raw metal, weathered burlap, wire, and old twine. Inspired by boundary-pushing legends like Eva Hesse, Jackson Po***ck, and Damien Hirst, Sarah rejects the ordinary, utilizing her welding torch and paintbrush to challenge, provoke, and stir the soul.
Beyond her studio work, Sarah loves giving back through private lessons, and her pieces rest in both prestigious public and private collections. We are thrilled to shine a spotlight on Carol Fink, a versatile painter whose vibrant work in watercolor and acrylic captures the beauty of the world around us. With a portfolio that spans from intimate portraits of people and animals to sweeping cityscapes and natural landscapes, Carol’s talent has earned her international recognition and two cover features for Midland Center for the Arts’ Center Magazine. As a dedicated educator and member of the WBCAA, Carol has shared her passion through numerous classes right here at Fourth Street Gallery. For Carol, art is a lifelong journey of discovery, and she continues to inspire us with her creative philosophy: “Painting is such a joy—how lucky to be able to view our world through creative eyes!”
