In 1870, Dr. John Hammond constructed and used the building for his Medical Practice to the Railroad Industry and the Town's people.

He and his family also occupied it as their residence. In 1920, after Dr. Hammond's death, the building was converted to apartments until the early 1940s. On This Very Spot in 1942, a Nursing Home was introduced into the structure until the mid-60s. It sat vacant until the early 70s when the Wellsville Historical Society purchased the building. After a massive rehabilitation the society opened the Museum for public tours. The Museum's 11 rooms each have their own theme including a Victorian Parlor, Indian and Civil War Artifacts, including the Sword of Col. Railroad memorabilia, Riverboat Models, Marine Gear, displays of local Pottery ware, and the original Death Mask of "Pretty Boy" Floyd.
