Announcing this year's summer artist-in-residence: Stacey Kelly returns with "Learning to See Like an Artist: Building Your Visual Language Toolbox" for ADULTS who would like to improve their drawing skills. Accurate drawing skills are a core essential to communicating visually. For this 5-day residency students will focus on observing from life and learn how to transfer what they see in 3 dimensions to a 2 dimensional surface. They will be exposed to techniques employed by old master artists to create successful representational drawings.

Classes will be held on 5 consecutive Wednesdays, starting June 26 through July 24 (July 31 rain date) and will run from 11AM-4PM with a lunch break from 1- 2PM.

Interested students should pre-register with the director of the Gmeiner by either calling 570-724-1917 or emailing [email protected]. These classes are offered for free thanks to fundraising by Art's Friends and a grant from the Bradford County Regional Arts Council.

The June 11th meeting of the Grand Canyon Photography Club will see the return of the annual photographic scavenger hunt. Members and interested guests should meet outside the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center in Wellsboro, PA at 7 p.m.

Each participating member will receive a list of items to search for and photograph in the downtown Wellsboro area. They can try to find the subjects themselves or pair up with other photographers. There is no time limit, though meetings usually end around 9 p.m. Club members may then submit an image from the hunt for the July critique.

Members may use whatever camera they wish (DSLR, mirrorless, phone, etc.). A tripod might be useful for some of the images, but is not required.

A rain date has been set for Wednesday, June 12th.

Anybody have poppies?
Part of the vision for the WWII Memorial Garden was to have red poppies (papaver rhoeas) blooming in the summer. I spread seeds, but they do not seem to have "taken." Same with white daisies, blue salvia, and red sedum. If anyone has a few of these plants that they would be willing to divide and give us a few clumps to get them established in the Memorial garden, it would be greatly appreciated!

Who is that fresh-faced beauty? Why, it's Wellsboro's very own movie star, Kitty Crawford! Her troubled childhood led to a glamorous movie career and a scandalous love life. Come learn a little about Kitty with a small pop-up exhibit of photographs, hats, and other items related to her remarkable life on display at the Gmeiner from May 30 - June 2.

This pop-up exhibit will "whet your whistle" for TWO upcoming events here at the Gmeiner. The hats were recreated by Christine Moore based on photographs of Kitty wearing them in advertisements. Christine, the first official milliner of the Kentucky Derby, will have a full exhibit of her hats and original designs in the Main Gallery in July.

Then in October, the Kelsey Academy will host a "Kitty Crawford" film festival at the Gmeiner. The film festival will include local historian Gale Largey's two documentaries about Kitty as well as one of her silent films and a couple of "talkies." Gale will be premiering his newest documentary, "Love Theft," which focuses on Kitty's husband suing her paramour for stealing her love away from him. Ooo la la!

On this Memorial Day, we hope that you will take a moment to pause and remember the brave souls who gave their all to defend this country. Please stop by the WWII Memorial between the Green Free Library and the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center and take a moment to read through the names listed there.

The names marked with a gold star indicate the ones who never made it home. And if you take a look at the surrounding garden, you will see a white star allium representing each one of those names. The alliums' blooms, like exuberant fireworks, celebrating and honoring their sacrifice.

Don't miss this exhibit! Lisa Arkus' "Primitive Painter" exhibit is ONLY on display until this Sunday, May 26th.

Lisa says about this exhibit, "My artistic journey is deeply intertwined with my love for nature—the woods, gardens, and the creatures that inhabit them. Cats and rabbits donning paper dresses, rendered against the backdrop of the majestic Allegany Mountains that cradle my home. Here, beneath the darkest skies on the east coast, lies a canvas full of life, where traveling birds mingle with flying saucers, and the stars themselves become storytellers. Through my art, I invite you on a journey of wonder and whimsy."

Dancing Flame Sangha invites you to its scheduled Mindful Meditation meeting on Thursday, 5/23/24 and Thursday, 5/30/24, at the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center, 134 Main St, Wellsboro, PA, beginning at 6:30 PM.

As usual, we may practice mindfulness in a variety of ways: using guided meditation, "singing meditation", walking meditation, listening to a dharma teaching, and then, sitting in silence. We will offer Metta for those in our awareness who are suffering, then share tea. During the last 20 minutes or so of our gathering, we practice - voluntarily - sharing how the practice of mindful meditation is being realized in our daily life.

We hope you can arrive early to help set up and to socialize before we begin meditation. If, however, you need to join us after we begin at 6:30, know that you are welcome. We ask that you enter the Center and the main room in mindful silence, as quietly as possible, and take a seat.

Thank you for considering joining us. We look forward to practicing together at the Gmeiner.
