Eckley in Evergreen - Great, One-time Volunteering Opportunity!

Saturday, November 21, 11am-2pm

Help us bring holiday magic to Eckley Miners’ Village! Join us in wreathmaking on Saturday, November 21, 11am-2pm in Eckley’s Episcopal Church basement. Gather your holiday spirit and creativity as we come together to make Eckley merry and bright!

We’ll provide lunch, live evergreens, and decorating supplies, but feel free to bring your own materials to use as well!

We ask volunteers who would like to participate to sign up via the link below: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/g/uXdhtV9cwj by November 18th.

*Due to spacing, we only need 12 volunteers. PLEASE NOTE: this is a gathering is to create holiday wreaths to decorate the buildings in Eckley, NOT to take home. (However, if after this workshop you think it would be an awesome public event to make your own wreath, let us know!) Please contact us with any questions!

We are also accepting donations of any holiday ribbon, shatterproof ornaments, faux fruit, floral wire, zip ties, etc. to help make the wreaths you have any items taking up space at home!

Call for Donations

We are gathering supplies to for holiday wreaths to make Eckley Miners’ Village merry, bright, and full of festive cheer—and we need your help!

Have a stash of seasonal craft supplies tucked away that could be put to good use? We are specifically looking for ribbons, pinecones, festive bells, floral wire and wreathmaking supplies, faux fruit, suitable ornaments, and any other holiday embellishments!

Any donated supplies can be dropped off or mailed to Eckley by 11/18. Thank you for helping us deck the halls at Eckley! Let us know if you have any questions.

Eckley Miners’ Village and the greater Luzerne County celebrate a rich heritage and history of anthracite mining—its families, labors, and legacies—but our area has historical roots that run a lot deeper than 1854. Long before Eckley was established as a coal mining patch town in the mid-19th century, this region was a proud and beautiful part of the vast ancestral land of the Lenni-Lenape (Delaware) people. Specifically, Northeastern Pennsylvania was also home to the Munsee (or Monsey) band of the Lenape, an Indigenous community heavily tied to the valleys and waterways, used for connectivity, travel, commerce, governance, and cultural life.

Prior to European contact in the mid-17th century, the Lenni-Lenape nation spanned and maintained what became multiple mid-Atlantic and Northeastern U.S. states with a population estimated between 8,000-12,000 people. Following eras of colonialism and forced migration, waves of immigrant mining families expanded upon the Lenape’s centuries of community, culture, and civilization by developing new towns, traditions, and tenacity that collectively still define Northeastern Pennsylvania. Today, the Lenape nation lives and thrives in states including and beyond than their original home in the northeast.

Eckley, in turn, and its surrounding region, is loved, preserved, and valued by a diversity of people, cultures, and histories. From its original caretakers in the Lenni-Lenape to the coal-mining families who likewise dedicated blood, sweat, and tears into its layered earth above and below ground, every generation has shaped the unique identity and enduring story of this place we all call home.
