Hello! My name is Meika Downey and I am pleased to serve as the new Project Manager for Eckley Miners’ Village’s strategic plan. As a reminder, the 2019 plan set out to identify preservation methods for some of Eckley’s underutilized historic buildings that would adapt them for new uses. The PHMC brought me onto the team to help this historically significant and culturally rich site advance into a sustainable future and I am excited to begin this important work. Though new to the Northeast Pennsylvania area, I do have New England roots prior to my family moving to the Appalachian coal region of Virginia as a child; it’s very meaningful for me to join the Eckley community in this way.
Part of my work in supporting the implementation of Eckley’s strategic plan is to cultivate and bolster the supporters and friends of the museum and I am really looking forward to engaging with you all. From the minute I began my role here at EMV, I have heard much about the tremendous support you all provide to the museum in not only your annual memberships and giving, but also in every other way you show up: attending our signature programs and events; reading our newsletters and staying up to date with Eckley; and importantly, telling others about our mission and impact. I can’t wait to meet you at Eckley events this year and to serve as your staff liaison for on-going membership engagement and support.
I know Eckley Miners’ Village must be important to you if you follow this page. While I am new to this site, I imagine, like me, you are affected by the tangible power of place that the historic village provides. Historic sites in general, and Eckley more specifically, occupy a league of their own in the world of museums and cultural heritage simply by the one-of-a-kind visitor experience they provide. The strategic plan is poised to further distinguish Eckley Miners’ Village in the region and beyond as we implement creative and unique ways to not only bring more people to experience the site and to preserve and maintain our historic structures, but also to create a sustainable framework that will continue to support Eckley for years to come. As key supporters of Eckley Miner’s Village, you are important stakeholders in this process, and I look forward to staying connected with you along the way.
In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me. I can be reached at [email protected] or 570-636-2070.
