The Lt. Governor’s Travel & Tourism Summit is headed to the Stafford Air & Space Museum on October 20! Join tourism professionals from across Oklahoma for an afternoon of education, practical strategies, industry conversation, and networking as we continue working toward making Oklahoma a Top Ten State in Tourism.

The afternoon will wrap up with a Town Hall Meeting with Lt. Governor Matt Pinnell, followed by a networking reception.

On August 23, 1965, Astronaut Thomas P. Stafford, prime crew pilot for NASA’s Gemini 6 mission, took to the skies over Galveston Bay, Texas, during parasail training. This photo captures General Stafford suspended beneath a parasail, with his water survival gear hanging below him.

Why parasail training? During the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo eras, astronauts prepared for potential launch emergencies, including scenarios that could require ejecting from their spacecraft and descending by parachute. This training helped astronauts practice emergency escape procedures and prepare for the challenges of early human spaceflight.

Happy World Space Week! 🚀🌙

Did you know World Space Week celebrates two major milestones in space history?

October 4, 1957: Sputnik 1 became the first human-made satellite to orbit Earth, opening the door to a new era of space exploration.

October 10, 1967: The Outer Space Treaty entered into force, establishing important principles for the peaceful exploration and use of outer space for the benefit of all humankind.

From groundbreaking discoveries to everyday technologies, space exploration continues to expand our knowledge, inspire future generations, and remind us of what humanity can achieve through curiosity, innovation, and cooperation.

At the Stafford Air & Space Museum, we’re proud to celebrate and share the history of flight and space exploration and the people who continue to push the boundaries of discovery.
