Old Stagecoach Stop Museum and Foundation

Old Stagecoach Stop Museum and Foundation The 2026 Tour Season will begin April 4 through October 31 Saturdays 10:00am-4:00pm. FREE admission on Saturdays. It was built by W.W. McDonald in the mid-1850s.

Scheduled group tours, $2 per person on Mon-Fri and Sunday. The Old Stagecoach Stop Foundation was formed to preserve, restore, protect and maintain the historic structure in Waynesville, Missouri, known as the "Old Stagecoach Stop" in order to permit its educational value to be appreciated by future generations. The Old Stagecoach Stop is the oldest building in Pulaski County. His hotel, origina

lly a double pen log building, was a stop on the St. Louis to Springfield stage route. A "lean-to" on the back of the building and a second story were added, probably in the 1880s. Each of the 10 rooms has been restored to a different significant period in building's past, from its beginnings as a residence and tavern on the Western frontier of the 1850s through its final chapter as a boarding house for soldiers and their wives in the early 1960s. The changes in the building's ownership and uses reflect the history of our local community, including the impacts of the Civil War, the completion of the railroad through Pulaski County, and the construction of Ft Leonard Wood. We invite you to visit us for a guided tour, or to simply take a step back in time as you walk through the rooms and view the period furnishings. For more information, or to schedule a group tour, please contact Jeanie Porter at 573-336-3561.

DISCLAIMER

There was no Old Settlers Day in the City Park this year, which is sponsored by the Pulaski County Museum & Historical Society. There seems to be some confusion about this, so let us be clear. The Old Stagecoach Stop Museum and the Pulaski County Museum & Historical Society are not the same organizations but are separate groups, with their own charters and Boards of Directors. The Old Stagecoach Stop facilitated Old Settlers Day from 2002 until 2014. The Old Stagecoach Stop turned over the operation of the annual event to the Pulaski County Museum in 2015. We had nothing to do with the cancellation of the festival and have been wrongfully blamed by some for its absence this year. We do publish the Old Settlers Gazette and did so this year, as we have since 2004.

The Old Stagecoach Stop was open on Saturday and despite the heat and the loss of the activity in the park, we had 75 visitors. They enjoyed visiting the building and some special presentations by guest speakers.

The speakers will be in Air conditioned rooms. The Civil War Medicine and medicinal plants presentation will be in the Old Stagecoach Stop. The Stagecoach Travel presentation will be in the McNeese building, the brick building in the OSS backyard. They will be ongoing throughout the day with a lunch break between noon-1:00pm.

We are finishing up delivering Old Settlers Gazettes today and they have been mailed to those OSS members, who requested them, in other states across the US. This all happens thanks to our dedicated board members and volunteers. I had help this year and I am so very thankful and appreciative. Those bundles of 50 get heavier every year. Gibson Barber, son of Audra Barber, grandson of Tim Berrier, of Lone Oak Printing was my trusty sidekick for delivery. He was such a great partner and handled those bundles with ease. Thanks so much Gibson. I appreciated your help and enjoyed spending that time with you.

If you don’t have your copy, find one at one of our advertisers, or stop by the Old Stagecoach Stop on Saturday between 10am and 4pm.

Ozarks historian Lynn Morrow has contributed a new Missouri Encyclopedia entry on the johnboat. Morrow spent years researching the name, history, and origins of the humble wooden watercraft that once graced many an Ozarks stream. To learn more, check out Morrow's article here: https://missouriencyclopedia.org/things/johnboats

Some people have shared that they found this post offensive. We appreciate that feedback and want to clarify what we meant.

As an organization representing retired educators, we hear from retirees every day who are concerned about the rising cost of living and what it means for their children and grandchildren.

Our message was never that grandparents shouldn’t enjoy helping with their grandchildren. Many do, and they treasure that time together.

Our concern is that quality child care has become so expensive that many working families have fewer and fewer affordable options. Retirement should give grandparents the freedom to help because they want to, not because soaring costs leave their families with no practical alternative.

If Amendment 5 passes and sales taxes are expanded to services like child care, those costs could increase even more. That’s the issue we believe deserves attention.

Congratulations to Lucy Nutt. Lucy is the daughter of Past President, tour guide volunteer, and long time board member of the Old Stagecoach Foundation. Many of us have watched Lucy grow-up. She often accompanied her mom and helped with decorating, cleaning, greeting visitors. She is spending this summer working with Ozark Actors Theater in Rolla. You can read more about Lucy in the article below. We are so proud of her.

Next in our Summer Spotlight series is Lucy Nutt (BFA Theatre Design and Technology). Lucy is currently working as the assistant costume designer, stitcher, and run crew for The Addams Family and Young Frankenstein at Ozark Actors Theater in Rolla, Missouri. 🧟‍♂️ 👻

Here is what Lucy loves most about her summer experience:
"My favorite part was seeing all of the costumes I worked on, on stage. Seeing a show come to life via costumes will always be the best thing in my opinion." 👗

Lucy also says, "I'm used to having a show only be 5 nights, and this show is open 5 nights for 3 weeks, so in total 15 shows. Its definitely preparing me for when I get a job after I graduate."

Congratulations, Lucy! We are so proud of your hard work. 🎨🎬
