Happy Hump day evening everyone, here is a little update on recent and current happenings at the museum.

We installed our second display case this month. This one, located near a front window, holds Lionel and American Flyer standard gauge trains. Standard gauge measures 2 1/8 inches between the rails and is approximately 1/32 in scale. Standard gauge was introduced in 1906 by the Lionel Corporation and later adopted by Lionel’s competitors Ives (1921) and American Flyer (1925). Lionel stopped manufacturing new standard gauge trains in1933 and stopped selling them in 1940.

The beige engine No. 492 (pictured) cost $45 in 1923, the year the model was introduced. The engine, three matching passenger cars and track sold for $75. I “Googled” average hourly wage for 1923, which was 65 cents so, at this price it was not an entry level train set.

Downtown Trick or Treat will be held in Waynesboro on Friday, Oct. 31, from 3:30 to 6 pm. We’ll be open to hand out goodies, so stop by and say hello.

Waynesboro merchants will be hosting First Friday, with evening hours on November 7th. We’ll be open between 5 and 8 pm, so come out and enjoy dinner at one of the many downtown eateries, do some shopping and of course come in and watch the trains.

This is a great article, we want to encourage parents all over the area to bring ya kiddos out and explore our museum while we may be a work in progress getting our permanent setups built and running, we still have displays and temporary operational layouts with little hidden details that fun to look for, also it teaches them about the hobby of Model Railroading and the history of railroading all in the same place at the same time

"The Class J locomotives were the most technically advanced steam locomotive design of any type that was ever in service anywhere in the world." — William Withuhn, Curator Emeritus, History of Technology and Transportation, Smithsonian Institution.

Engine No. 611 (the only surviving Class J steamer) has been beautifully restored and is returning to passenger excursion service for just five weekends this fall.

Happy hump day to all the train buffs, railroad historians, and everyone in between out in Facebook land, here is a little Museum update for everyone.

We’re still accepting small ($10 to $25) donations toward display materials through the end of this month. Thanks to your generosity we now have enough funds to purchase three display cases for our exhibit room.

Not all donations have come in the form of money. One of our patrons, a model railroader who also enjoys carpentry, has donated shelving for the display cases. The shelves are made of dark oak and will be used in a wall mounted display case where we will show our standard gauge Lionel Trains (see photo below). Unfortunately, we don’t have space for a permanent standard gauge layout, but in the future, we may be able to set one up under a Christmas tree for the holidays.

The glass display case in the media room has been refurbished. We had to call a locksmith to be able to get into the cabinet and upon hearing that we don’t charge admission, he provided the services at no cost!

The daughter-in-law of one of our members is an art teacher and she has volunteered to paint a railroad themed mural in our media room.

A gentleman who is moving into a retirement community has donated his entire basement size O gauge layout to the museum. This includes benchwork, track, buildings, and nearly 200 cars and locomotives. The O gaugers will begin construction of our new, permanent O gauge layout next month, using much of this donated material.

One of our members has donated a new back door. It is larger (48” wide) than the current door which will help with moving materials in and out and it will comply with life safety codes so that eventually we can hold special events open to the public. Installation can be costly, as it requires cutting a new door opening in a brick and cinderblock wall. If you know a contractor who would be willing to volunteer time and resources or can do the work at a discounted rate, please have him or her contact us.

If there is anyone interested in donating to us the donation info can be found via the link provided https://www.acrrm.org/donate
