A thank you to all of the attendees of our special presentation by Karl Rhodes! Last Friday, Karl shared the incredible story of his ancestor's experiences during the American Civil War as chronicled in the novel Peggy's War! It was a fantastic, in depth, highly researched presentation, and we even had some lively discussion after the presentation as community members reflected on residential maps of Washington County after the war! Many attendees still have family ties to some of the people and regions mentioned in Karl’s presentation. It was a very special experience!

Purchase your own copy of Peggy's War at the Renfrew Gift Shop located in our Visitor Center!

In honor of all of the prom goers currently taking photos across the grounds of Renfrew Museum and Park, please enjoy these photos of Ashley Sonntag, Renfrew’s Executive Director, taken before her senior prom in 2015! As you can see, she also took her photos at a historic site! Photos taken at Glen Foerd on the Delaware in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It’s so fun to see how the prom fashions have changed over the last 11 years! Have a great time and be safe, everyone!

Refusing to Fight!
Hear the amazing story of his great-great-grandmother, Margaret “Peggy” Rhodes, who ran a depot on the unionist underground railroad for Mennonites and Dunkers who refused to fight in the Civil War. Peggy concealed refugees — six at a time — in a secret cellar under a trapdoor in her bedroom floor. Her loyalty to the Union, however, provided no protection when General Philip Sheridan’s troops burned the Shenandoah Valley in 1864.
