This, the third image in the 3-part series of photographs about White's Department Store, shows the interior of the Store in about 1906. The store was on West Main Street in Waynesboro, VA.
Note all the boxes, bottles, and merchandise on the shelves. In 1906 customers in department stores like White's were usually waited on by a salesperson or clerk. They would let that person know what they were needing, and the clerk would bring the items to the customer. The idea of self-serve, a revolutionary idea, was not common until much later.

In the previous post you saw the outside of White's Department Store known as White's or White Brothers. In 1935, it was located at 415-418 W Main Street. The card shown in this post is an advertisement for White Brothers and it is postmarked June 9, 1921.

This photograph of the Neese Hotel, which no longer stands, also shows Whites Department Store, the large white building to the left of Western Auto. Whites Department Store was a popular place to shop in the late 19th and early 20t centuries.
The White's Department Store building was eventually remodeled by Grand Piano, but eventually burned to the ground in the 1970's. Grand Piano rebuilt at the same location on Main Street but by 2014 it was known as a Porche Dealership and today in 2026, it is the home of the Russell Museum.

In the past private money was common in many locations.
This private one-dollar bill is part of the Waynesboro Heritage Foundation's collection and is on exhibit in the Banking Exhibit in the Waynesboro Heritage Museum located at the corner of Wayne & Main in Waynesboro, VA.
The bill has the name John B. Smith printed above the words one dollar, and is payable at Waynesboro, Virginia Band. It is dated September 2, 1861.

The item pictured here includes two small silver-coated metal sheets that are attached by a hinge on the left-hand side. Inside it holds a note pad.
The designs on the front and back indicate that this was probably used by women who may have carried it in their purse.

This postcard is of Rose Cliff Fruit Farm, Waynesboro, Virginia. Rose Cliff, a house that is registered in the National Register of Historic Places, and is part of the Tree Streets Historic District, was built around 1850. The farm was once a thriving apple operation from the late 19th century until the 1930's. Rose Cliff farm grew the Albemarle Pippin apple which was a favorite of Thomas Jefferson. When the apple industry declined, the land was eventually sold to developer Richard L. McElroy who subdivided it.

This 1940's black and white photograph shows Miss Kate Collins, Principal of Wenonah Elementary School with a group children dressed up for a May Day Celebration. They are on the steps of the old Wenonah Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia.

This photograph is part of a recently received collection and is one that is new to our collection. It is a view of Main Street in Waynesboro in the early 20t century. The Neese Hotel can be seen just right of center.
However, the hotel and the buildings seen to the right of the hotel no longer exist. Another thing to note in this photograph is how Main Street was 'paved'!
