In the 17 th century citrus fruits also known as “ Italian fruits” were enticing gardeners with their bountiful fruits, intoxicating perfume and glorious foliage. Great “limonaia” or greenhouses were constructed to house the fruits during harsh European winters and then ferried outside in temperate climes. Giovanni Ferrari, a Jesuit scholar attempted to identify the varieties in a volume of engravings and text in 1636. One hundred years later Johan Christoph Volckamer of Nuremberg, one of the new monied class of gentlemen who could afford to maintain greenhouses, printed his own work on citrus fruits with remarkable backgrounds showing Palladian villas along the Brenta.

A spit of sand 30 miles out in the Atlantic works its magic on a visitor!
