We were very fortunate to host the Matao-CHamoru collective Gi Matan Guma' (Gi Matan Guma’) for a residency including a presentation of "MATAO [in process]" last month. This ritual activation calls upon ancestral memories to realize new futures that will overcome today's threats to environment and humanity.

The collective's multimedia exploration transformed the Gordon Center into a site of collective healing, reminding us of the strength of intergenerational community over formidable challenges.

The program marked the culmination of a CHamoru-Wabanaki cultural exchange that began in 2025, when the Passamaquoddy Tribe invited Gi Matan Guma' to join the Annual Ancestors Paddle on the Skutik (St. Croix) River. During their recent return to the Dawnland, the collective attended Passamaquoddy Community Days and reconnected with culture bearers, who joined the group during the ritual activation.

This activation was presented in conjunction with the Colby Museum's exhibition "Imagining an Archipelago: Art from Cuba, Guam, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Their Diasporas" and supported by the Terra Foundation for American Art, Colby Arts, and the Lunder Institute for American Art.

Lillian Garcia-Roig is a Cuban-born painter whose practice is centered in land, landscape, belonging, and how these inform identity. In her "Hecho con Cuba: Homage to Vinales" series, Garcia-Roig contends with her physical detachment from Cuba by painting the Viñales Valley with pigment made of Cuban soil, reconfiguring what it means to be an on-site landscape painter.

Hear from the artist herself about this piece and how it relates to the themes of the exhibition, "Imagining an Archipelago," on view at the museum through June 6, 2027.

Discover the multiplicity of languages on display in "Imagining an Archipelago: Art from Cuba, Guam, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Their Diasporas," on view in Upper and Lower Jetté Galleries through June 6, 2027.

Throughout the exhibition and related publication, texts are presented in four of the most widely spoken languages across these islands: Spanish, English, Filipino, and CHamoru.

Many of the exhibiting artists navigate their lives multilingually—a presence reflected in the intentional titling of their artworks, as well as the translating, mistranslating, or conscious refusal to translate those titles.

Plan your visit to experience "By Design: The Worlds of Betsy James Wyeth" at the Joan Dignam Schmaltz Gallery of Art in the Paul J. Schupf Art Center before it closes on November 2.

The exhibition showcases the ways in which people and places can mutually transform each other, with newly commissioned works by Mandy Lamb (Mandy Lamb), Linda Nguyen Lopez (Linda Nguyen Lopez), Elaine K. Ng (Elaine K. Ng), and Claire Pentecost (Claire Pentecost) created in response to time in residence on Allen and Benner Islands, whose landscapes were shaped extensively by Betsy James Wyeth (1921–2020).

"By Design" is organized in association with the Wyeth Foundation for American Art and presented simultaneously across three institutions. You can explore the companion presentations at the Farnsworth Art Museum () through December 31 and the Brandywine Museum of Art (Brandywine Museum of Art) through January 13.

Dr. Elisa German, Colby Museum's Lunder Curator of Works on Paper and Whistler Studies, recently contributed to "Winslow Homer: Painter, Etcher," a catalogue published in association with the exhibition of the same name at the Portland Museum of Art (Portland Museum of Art). This is the first publication to foreground the role of Winslow Homer's etchings within his career.
