Established in 1932, the Grout Museum District is widely acknowledged as one of the cornerstones of culture in Northeast Iowa. Accredited by the American Association of Museums, the Grout Museum District includes five distinct properties - the Grout Museum of History & Science, the Bluedorn Science Imaginarium, the Snowden House, the Rensselaer Russell House Museum and the Sullivan Brothers Iowa V
eterans Museum. The Grout Museum of History & Science was founded by Henry Whittemore Grout, a prominent Waterloo resident, financier and state legislator who loved to travel and collect reminders of the places he visited, sharing these finds with children in the community. By the time of his death, Grout had collected over 2,000 objects. His will established an endowment and named trustees to care for his collection, which was displayed for many years at the local YMCA. The current building at 503 South Street was completed in 1956 and opened to the public as a not-for-profit museum. The Grout's many attractions have drawn visitors from all over the state of Iowa and surrounding states, and its educational programs involve students from Waterloo, Cedar Falls and surrounding areas. The latest addition to the Grout Museum District includes the new Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum. The official veterans museum of the state of Iowa, the museum honors the service and sacrifice of all Iowa veterans from the Civil War to present. Tom Brickman was a valued volunteer here at the Grout Museum District. A Vietnam veteran, he secured the photos of all the Iowans who were killed in Vietnam for the Museum's "Faces to go with Names" kiosk and he also sent them to the national Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington.
Tom contributed a great deal of his time to the Museum's 2015 Vietnam Exhibit, assisting with its construction and creating dog tags for every fallen Iowan, by hand. These dog tags are now on display in the permanent Vietnam portion of the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum.
Tom also prepared and served chili for several Sullivan Brothers Veterans Memorial 5K/10K runs and other events here at the museum -- including the 2022 run, even though he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer.
Tom served in the 196th Light Infantry Brigade in Vietnam and was a longtime custodian at the Janesville Schools.
The Museum District will miss his positive attitude and great spirit.

Each manned mission into space requires a hand-picked crew of astronauts. At NASA, the astronaut crew works with a graphic designer to create a patch representing the crew and their mission.
Enter the NASA Iowa Space Grant Consortium Design Sprint Challenge to have a chance to be the mission patch designer for a new ISGC "mission" in STEM education! ISGC is partnering with their informal education and outreach affiliates to launch an innovative ISGC internship program.
ISCG invites the state of Iowa to help design a mission patch for the new program that pairs student interns interested in STEM and STEM education with a museum/science center affiliate.
The affiliates participating in this new program are:
- National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium
- Grout Museum District
- Putnam Museum
- Science Center of Iowa

Happy Holidays from your friends at the Grout Museum District!
Please note our holiday hours, and new winter Imaginarium hours that will begin in 2024.
Join us in recognizing long time volunteers and donors, Howard and Roberta Craven!
The couple have recently made a donation to the Grout Museum District to fund landscaping efforts in front of the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum. The Cravens, along with their grandsons, Luke and Cole Earnest, have also spent approximately 60 hours cleaning up other outdoor areas at the District.
Howard Craven has been a volunteer with the Grout Museum District for over two decades. He has helped with numerous projects over the years and enjoys assisting with keeping the Museum exterior looking nice. His grandson, Luke, said “When grandpa sees something that needs to be done, he does it!”
The Museum thanks them for their generosity and support! We could not continue to do what we do here at the Museum District without our volunteers and donors!

Stroll down the paths of the Cedar Valley’s past at this year’s Strolling with the Spirits on Oct. 21 in Waterloo Cemetery. Visit our website today to purchase your tickets for this family friendly event. Spots are limited!
Registrar Nick talks about a canvas pouch that was made at Powers Manufacturing Co. in Waterloo, IA during WWI. We aren’t 100% sure what this pouch was used for, however, it is the same size as an Army Ordinance Handbook, and we have documentation showing that Powers made something for Army books around this time. We THINK it may have been used as a protective cover. What are your thoughts?
Registrar, Nick, highlights an artifact that is currently on display in the Museum’s “War Work” exhibit.

Twenty years ago tomorrow, the United States experienced a terrorist attack that killed nearly 3,000 people and launched a twenty year war of reprisal. The 9/11 attack has been and will continue to be at the forefront of the nation’s memory. Nineteen years ago, on the one year commemoration of the attack, the Grout Museum collected the memories of that day from Cedar Valley citizens. The one hour video can be viewed tomorrow from 10AM-4PM in the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veteran Museum's Theatre with paid admission.
