Bobby Douglas 1968 Olympic Bag! 🇺🇸 🤼

Bobby Douglas broke racial barriers in 1964 when he became the first African American to make a U.S. Olympic wrestling team. He returned to the Olympics in 1968 and is widely recognized as the first African American captain of the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team. In addition to his Olympic career, Douglas won a silver medal at the 1966 World Championships and a bronze medal at the 1970 World Championships.

As a coach, he led Arizona State to its first (and only) NCAA wrestling team national championship in 1988. At Iowa State (1992–2006), he guided the Cyclones to three NCAA runner-up finishes and coached dozens of All-Americans. He also mentored 13 individual NCAA champions, including the legendary undefeated four-time NCAA champion Cael Sanderson. Douglas additionally served as head coach of the 1992 U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team in Barcelona, where the Americans won six medals, including three gold medals.

Tricia Saunders changed the course of wrestling history. 💪

A four-time World Champion and the first U.S. woman to win a World wrestling title, Saunders paved the way for generations of female wrestlers. She captured 11 U.S. National Women's Freestyle championships, won 11 World Team Trials, and retired without ever losing to an American opponent.

Her impact didn't stop on the mat. As a coach and advocate, Saunders helped expand opportunities for women in wrestling, including coaching at the first Olympic Games to feature women's wrestling in 2004.

As the first woman inducted as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Tricia Saunders' legacy continues to inspire wrestlers around the world. 🏆🤼‍♀️

Sometimes, one simple gesture can leave a lasting impact.

As a young wrestler, Dan Gable was given a literal key to West Waterloo High School by Coach Bob Siddens. It was more than a key—it was a symbol of trust, responsibility and the belief that Gable was ready to lead by example.

Coach Siddens recognized Gable’s potential and helped shape the mindset that would carry him to greatness on and off the mat.

Help us honor Coach Siddens’ lasting legacy by supporting the Friends of Bob Siddens Endowment Campaign and continuing his impact on future generations of wrestlers.

The 1950 NCAA tournament, held in the West Gym on the lowa State Teachers College campus in Cedar Falls, produced one of the greatest championship groups in wrestling history. Among the eight winners were four wrestlers who would eventually become three-time NCAA champions and one wrestler who would go on to capture an Olympic gold medal.

The champions are (front row, from left) Anthony Gizoni, Waynesburg State, 121; Joe Patacsil, Purdue, 128; Lowell Lange, Cornell College, 136;
Keith Young, lowa Teachers, 145; Bill Nelson, Iowa Teachers, 155; Bill Smith, Iowa Teachers, 165; Joe Scarpello, lowa, 175, and Dick Hutton, Oklahoma A&M, heavyweight. Lange, Young, Nelson and Hutton were all three-time NCAA champions and Smith won the gold medal at 160.5 pounds in the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland. Also, Hutton became world heavyweight professional champion in 1957.

Final team standings: 1. Iowa Teachers 30; 2. Purdue 16; 3. Cornell College 14; 4. (tie) Oklahoma A&M, Syracuse 10; 6. Iowa 7.
