Anyone else struggling with their garden this year? ๐ŸŒฑ Thankfully, the Washington Garden Club of 1945 left us some useful tips! ๐Ÿ’“

Here's what they had to say for June gardening:

"1. Plant Sweet Corn.
2. Sink pots of house plants in semi-shaded spots. Do not forget them. They need water.
3. Many Lilies detest lime, and no Lily requires it.
4. Prune climbing Roses, leaving new shoots for next year's bloom.
5. Maintenance, watering and cultivating, plus removal of spent flowers, are the chief tasks of June."

Stay tuned for more vintage gardening tips this year! ๐ŸŒฟ

Did you know that the holiday that we now refer to as Memorial Day used to be called "Decoration Day"? ๐Ÿค” To be more specific, Decoration Day, a holiday established to honor fallen American Civil War soldiers, eventually morphed into Memorial Day - a day to celebrate fallen service members from ALL American wars. ๐Ÿช–

It was originally called Decoration Day because it was tradition to gather as a community and decorate the gravesites of fallen soldiers - pretty interesting, huh? Check out the Decoration Day portrait below! Baskets of flowers and flags used to decorate gravesites can be spotted at the bottom of the photo from 1912. ๐Ÿ’

Following WWI, the holiday was expanded to celebrate all fallen American service members. In 1971, the holiday we now know as Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by Congress.

Here is a small collection of images donated to the Washington History Museum Archives from local servicemen & their families.

The Washington Historical Society would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all fallen service members from our wonderful community. Have a safe and memorable Memorial Day! ๐Ÿ’“

Happy International Museum Day! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ โœจ๏ธ

Did you know that the Washington History Museum, first established in 1984, was originally located in the Jesuit Hall Building? A little over a decade later, in 1995, the Washington Historical Society relocated the museum to what was formerly known as the Presbyterian Church. Now, 31 years later, the museum continues to thrive on the corner of E. Fourth Street & Market Street.

The Washington History Museum is free to the public and is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and celebrating WashMO's vibrant and rich history.
