September 11, 2001:
In total, 343 Firefighters selflessly gave their own lives trying to help those in need.
37 Police Officers of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department, 23 Police Officers of the New York City Police Department, 8 emergency medical technicians and paramedics, and a single Patrolman from the New York Fire Patrol paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The immediate deaths of the terrorist attack on 9/11 included 246 lives lost of Flight 11, Flight 175, Flight 77, and Flight 93; 2,606 in the World Trade Centers and in the surrounding area; and 125 at the Pentagon.
In total - 2,977 men, woman, and children were killed on September 11, 2001. These number do NOT reflect those who have died of injury, illness, or su***de due to the events of 9/11.
Over the course of the next 21 years, since September 11, 2001, thousands of services members have paid the ultimate sacrifice with tens of thousands of lives being changed due to injuries sustained while on the battle field in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
2,461 U.S service members and 1,144 allied forces who gave their lives over the past 20 years in Afghanistan with 980,000 U.S. Afghanistan War Veterans. 20,722 members of the U.S. military had been wounded in action in Afghanistan, not including the 13 service members murdered and numerous others who were injured on August 26, 2021 during the the terrorist attack in Kabul, Afghanistan.
4,598 U.S. Service Members alongside our allied forces were KIA (Killed in Action) in Iraq where an additional 31,994 U.S. forces were wounded in action (WIA) as a result of the Iraq War.
These number do NOT account for our service members who succumbed to injuries or internal battles upon returning home. One of the most recent studies show that 4 times as many Active Duty troops and Veterans have committed su***de than have died in combat.
