**AAPI Heritage Month Event - May 07, 2026 | 6-8pm EDT**
Join us to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, as the Library of Congress and the Old Korean Legation Museum host a screening of “Songs of Love from Hawaii,” a documentary about early Korean immigrants to Hawaii. Following the screening, director Jinyoung Lee will answer questions from the audience. The program also features a demonstration of pansori, a traditional Korean musical performance, and a display collection items honoring AAPI history, culture and contributions to American society.

In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, the Library of Congress and the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation present a special film screening on the history of Korean immigration to Hawai‘i.

The program features Songs of Love from Hawai‘i (하와이연가), a documentary that brings to life the stories of the first Korean immigrants who arrived in 1903—an early chapter of Korean American history marked by resilience, hope, and community, which have helped shape the broader American immigrant experience. Directed by Jinyoung Lee, the film has gained international recognition for its distinctive blend of documentary storytelling and musical expression.

Director Jinyoung Lee is known for her work documenting cultural heritage and diaspora history through film. Songs of Love from Hawai‘i has been featured in several international cultural and film events and has received attention for its unique blend of documentary storytelling and musical interpretation.

아시아·태평양계 미국인 문화유산의 달(AAPI Heritage Month)을 기념하여, 미 의회도서관(Library of Congress)과 국가유산청 산하 국외소재문화유산재단은 하와이 한인 이민사의 여정을 조명하는 특별 영화 상영회를 공동 개최합니다.

이번 프로그램에서는 다큐멘터리 영화 를 상영합니다. 이 작품은 1903년 하와이에 도착한 한인 이민자들의 이야기를 생생하게 되살리며, 인내와 희망, 그리고 공동체 정신으로 점철된 한국계 미국인의 초기 역사를 담고 있습니다.

Eric Choi(한국명 최준서), a Korean student studying in Boston, visited the Legation with his mother. Eric has a special connection to our history: he is a descendant of Yi Jong Eung(이종응), a diplomat of the Korean Empire, and his mother is also a descendant of Minister Pak Chung Yang(박정양). It was truly meaningful to welcome guests whose family ties reach so deeply into the Legation’s past.

Eric also brought a generous gift. With money he earned from his part-time job, he specially commissioned more than thirty tumblers, each designed to raise awareness about the importance of Korean cultural heritage overseas. It was a thoughtful and impressive gesture, and we are deeply grateful.

Visits like this remind us of our responsibility to continue caring for and managing the Legation as a place that belongs to everyone. We extend our sincere appreciation once again to Eric Choi and his mother for their meaningful visit.

보스턴에서 유학 중인 한인 학생 최준서(미국명 Eric Choi) 군이 어머니를 모시고 공사관을 방문했습니다. 최준서 군은 대한제국 시절, 외교관을 지냈던 이종응 선생의 후손이자 어머니 또한 박정양 공사의 후손이라는 독특한 인연을 가지고 있습니다. 우리 공사관에 귀한 손님이 머언 세월 너머 발걸음을 하신 거지요.

특히 최준서 군은 자신이 아르바이트로 모은 돈을 가지고 30여개의 텀블러를 특별 주문 제작했는데, 이 또한 우리 공사관에 선물로 전달했습니다. 해외에 있는 우리 문화유산에 대한 많은 관심을 촉구하는 내용이 담긴 의미있고 멋진 텀블러였습니다.

이런 귀한 발걸음이 공사관에 계속 이어지면서, 모두의 공사관으로 더욱 잘 관리 운영해나가야 겠다는 다짐도 직원들과 함께 해봅니다. 최준서 군과 어머니께 거듭 감사의 말씀을 올립니다!

“시원하고 새콤하여 말로 다 할 수 없는 맛” 조선 후기 학자 성태중(1732–1809)이 풍속·일화·야사를 기록한 『청성잡기(靑城雜記)』에 등장하는 동치미 국물 맛에 대한 표현입니다. 한국인과 김치는 예나 지금이나 뗄레야 뗄 수 없는 관계입니다. 미국 의회도서관에는 한문 원문과 현대 한국어 번역이 함께 실린 영인본이 소장되어 있습니다. (https://lccn.loc.gov/2007329702/?loclr=fbint ). 김치의 날(11.22.)을 맞아 한번 찾아서 읽어보면 어떨까요?

The phrase “refreshing and pleasantly tart—a flavor beyond words” appears in "Ch’ŏngsŏng chapgi" (靑城雜記), a collection of customs, anecdotes, and unofficial histories written by the late Chosŏn scholar Sŏng Tae-jung (1732–1809), describing the taste of tongch’imi (radish-water kimchi) brine. Koreans and kimchi have always been inseparable—from the past to the present. Did you know there are Korean folktales about kimchi? One fascinating example is “The Limping Illegitimate Son Who Killed the Manchu Soldiers.” The tale appears in “Ch’ŏngsŏng chapgi” 靑城雜記, a collection of customs, anecdotes, and unofficial histories written by late Chosŏn scholar Sŏng Tae-jung (1732–1809). The Library of Congress holds a reprint edition featuring the original Hanmun text alongside a modern Korean translation (https://lccn.loc.gov/2007329702/?loclr=fbint).

Set during the Manchu Invasion of Korea in 1636, the tale follows an illegitimate son (sŏja) who was unable to flee from the advancing Manchu troops with his family and hid in the abandoned house of a wealthy family. One day, two Manchu soldiers leaped into the courtyard, ravenously ate kimchi from large earthenware jars (tok) buried in the ground, and—still thirsty—began drinking the remaining tongch’imi (radish-water kimchi) brine by plunging their heads deep into the jar. Seizing the moment, the sŏja pushed them headfirst into the jars, trapping them inside. After the war, he cut off their ears as proof of his deed and was awarded a military post.

While a bit unsettling, the tale vividly captures both kimchi culture and the social atmosphere of its time. It also reveals Sŏng Tae-jung’s genuine love for kimchi—he describes tongch’imi brine as “refreshing and pleasantly tart—a flavor beyond words.” “Ch’ŏngsŏng chapgi” contains many more extraordinary and little-known stories. “Song of Love from Hawaii: Telling the Story of Korean Immigration to America”

The history of Korean immigration to the United States began in 1903, when the first group of about one hundred Koreans arrived in Hawaii. This special lecture and film screening retraces the journey of those early immigrants—whose stories are deeply intertwined with Korea’s modern history—through the documentary Song of Love from Hawaii (하와이 연가). Today, first-year students from Dongtan Global High School visited the Old Korean Legation in Washington, D.C. The students arrived in the capital after traveling through Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. In recent years, many Korean high school students have included the Old Korean Legation as a meaningful stop on their study tours to the United States. We hope this visit will inspire them to dream boldly and pursue their future aspirations. Wishing all the students a safe and pleasant conclusion to their journey!
