NATHANIEL DONNETT’s work brings to light the dark past of American history and culture. His ‘Small Bag’ series makes reference to the “brown bag test” and the “pencil test” - in the pencil test, a pencil is pushed through the person’s hair. How easily the pencil comes out determines whether the person “passed” or “failed” the test. This test was used to determine racial identity in South Africa during the apartheid era, distinguishing whites from coloureds and blacks.
