We were hacked.

If you received an email from us about a "project" this week, do not click the link.

Our email was compromised. From what we can tell, only email addresses were accessed. However, those addresses were used to send a phishing email asking recipients to log into their email to "view project details." It was semi-convincing. If you entered your password, assume you've been compromised.

What to do:
- Change your email password
— Turn on two-factor authentication
— Check your account for forwarding rules or filters you didn't create

A few friends and partners have told me the same thing has happened to them or people they know in the design industry over the past few weeks. Please stay safe.

I have no idea where the time has gone. I've been focused on writing the 150+ articles for the new Vocal Type site and working on a few commissions that I actually missed out tenth anniversary by a week. But better late than never I suppose.

I'm not good at celebrating, but I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who has been a part of this beautiful, insane, emotional journey that is Vocal Type. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine it becoming what it is today. But thanks to all of you for making it with me. Here's to another 10 years!

Hey everybody. Hope all's well.

As we continue to work on the new site for Vocal Type's 10th anniversary, I would greatly appreciate your input.

Honestly, creating this new site has been, and still is, overwhelming, but in a really good way. Because it finally feels like I'm finally building everything that Vocal Type was always meant to be.

For example, we're adding a protest sign generator, where you can select a typeface, change the color, pick your paper size, download a print-ready PDF, and bring it to your local printer. Also, instead of sharing galleries of how this community has put our typefaces to use, we're doing community interviews, to learn more about the project, your practice, and most importantly, you. The site will feature essays, historical research, typeface ideas, and much more.

But with all of this, I'd love to hear what you want to see. Are there any other resources we can provide? Lists of people, places, or things we can direct you to? Something else? Reach out if you think of anything. Many thanks!

Hey everyone, I'm back with more of the inspiration behind VTC Wii. Specifically around the Women's Rights Movements Dolle Mina and Wij Vrouwen Eisen (We Women Demand).
I think the most surprising find throughout this research process was discovering a photograph from Dolle Mina's first anniversary demonstration, where Angela Davis was a speaker.

Back at it with more of the history and references that inspired VTC Wij, as a part of our year long collaboration with .
We started off with Anton de Kom and his legacy, which inspired us to look at a broader postwar history of protest in the Netherlands.
Here we move from Anton de Kom on anti-colonial and migration struggles and dive into the history of Indonesia and Suriname's fight for independence, along with the fight for civil rights for those living in the Netherlands.

In case you missed it, we've recently released a new font family called VTC Wij, built around our year-long, multi-project collaboration with .

In 2025, Graphic Matters, a Breda, Netherlands-based design organization, invited us to participate in a multi-project collaboration rooted in Dutch postwar protest history. Together, we developed CHARACTERS:
Voices in Type, a project that unfolded across a mural, a protest sign-making curriculum for secondary school students, an exhibition, a Koppermaandag publication, a one-day conference, and the typeface VTC WJ.

The project began with Anton de Kom, a writer, resistance fighter, and anti-colonial activist whose work became an early reference point in Dutch colonial and resistance history. His grandson was among the more than sixty volunteers who painted the 105-me-ter mural in Breda where VTC Wij first appeared.

As a part of our year long collaboration with , VTC Wij draws from multiple liberation movements across Dutch postwar history. However; it began with one man: Anton de Kom.

Anton de Kom was a Surinamese writer, resistance fighter, and anti-colonial activist whose 1934 book Wij slaven van Suriname was the first history of slavery and Dutch colonialism written from a Surinamese perspective. He died in a German concentration camp in 1945. For decades, his work remained largely unknown outside Surinamese-Dutch communities. This is his story, and the starting point for VTC Wij.

I'm back, with what's probably our largest update in quite a white.

In 2025, Graphic Matters, a Breda, Netherlands-based design organization, invited us to participate in a multi-project collaboration rooted in Dutch postwar protest history. Together, we developed CHARACTERS:
Voices in Type, a project that unfolded across a mural, a protest sign-making curriculum for secondary school students, an exhibition, a Koppermaandag publication, a one-day conference, and the typeface VTC Wij (Dutch for "We").

VTC Wij draws from protest movements including Indonesian in-dependence, LGBTQ rights, Dolle Mina, Wij Vrouwen Eisen, the squatters' movement, Surinamese independence, anti-nuclear protest, and Black Lives Matter, among others.

Vocal Type wouldn't have come this far without you, for so many reasons. Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and new year. As 2026 begins, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on 2025.
In total honesty, 2025 was a tough year. For us, our family, our industry, and you know the rest. However, it was also a very necessary and meaningful year. In the absence of client work came an abundance of clarity regarding our vision for the future.
After 4 years (2020-24) of moving a million miles an hour, I never had the opportunity to sit with and think about what I want Vocal Type to fully be, what our identity looks like, what does a more expansive website look like, what do I actually want to build. This year provided me the opportunity to figure all of that out. While this is a much longer story, I'm proud to share some of the work we've done this year.
And this July, I'm looking forward to celebrating 10 years of Vocal Type! More to come.
