The Georgetown University Art Galleries are pleased to announce our faculty exhibition, Studio Hours / After Hours by Professor E. Brady Robinson, on view in our Spagnuolo South Gallery. Join us for the opening reception on Friday, September 18, from 6–8 p.m. RSVP via the link in our bio.

Studio Hours / After Hours explores and documents the people and places that continue to define Baltimore’s creative community. Over the past decade, Robinson has photographed this community through portraiture, editorial collaborations, and documentary work. Moving between the controlled environment of the studio and the city’s music venues, galleries, and performance spaces, these photographs celebrate agency, individuality, and the energy of the people who shape Baltimore’s cultural landscape.

The exhibition brings together studio portraits, album cover collaborations, and photographs from Robinson’s archive documenting Baltimore Club culture. Featured throughout the exhibition are Underground Club Queen Kotic Couture, filmmaker, musician, and director of Dark City Baltimore, TT The Artist, and Ballroom ICON Marquis Clanton of the House of Revlon. The documentary photographs were made at venues including The Crown, Metro Gallery, and Creative Alliance.

This exhibition is generously supported by Lucille M. & Richard F. X. Spagnuolo.

The Georgetown University Art Galleries are pleased to announce Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Look Alive, an exhibition of select installations by internationally acclaimed Mexican-Canadian media artist. Join us for the opening reception and meet the artist on Friday, September 18, from 6–8 p.m.

Bringing together works spanning more than three decades of Lozano-Hemmer’s practice, the exhibition explores presence, participation, machine vision, and the act of looking. Throughout the exhibition, visitors become part of responsive environments that shift through their movement, gaze, and biometric data, blurring the boundaries between observer and observed.

At the center, is the premiere of Pulse Map, a site-specific installation created for Georgetown’s Maria & Alberto de la Cruz Art Gallery and the newest work in Lozano-Hemmer’s celebrated Pulse series. Nearly 3,000 lightbulbs fill the gallery, each glimmering to the rhythm of a recorded heartbeat from a past participant. Visitors can record their own heartbeat, adding their presence to an installation that continually changes over time.

Across Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Look Alive, individual actions become collective experiences. A heartbeat joins countless others. A movement activates a machine’s gaze. Faces return the visitor’s look. Each interaction leaves a trace. The works in the exhibition are never entirely fixed. Instead, they continually evolve, making every visit unique. Those who came before are connected with those yet to come.

Curated by Director & Chief Curator Jaynelle Hazard. This exhibition is supported by Maria and Alberto de la Cruz, Lucille M. & Richard F. X. Spagnuolo, and the Georgetown Humanities Initiative.

Please join us in welcoming Mia Johnson as the new Exhibitions & Public Engagement Manager at the Georgetown University Art Galleries!

Mia joins us after serving as our Graduate Intern over the past year while pursuing her M.A. in Art & Museum Studies at Georgetown University. During her internship, she contributed to exhibition research, public programming, communications, marketing, and the continued development of the Galleries’ new website.

This past spring, Mia also co-curated “speculative morphologies” in the Spagnuolo Gallery alongside her classmates in Prof. Hazard’s Curatorial Studies course. The exhibition, presented in partnership with The Kreeger Museum and featuring works from Georgetown’s own Special Collections, exemplified her thoughtful approach to curatorial practice and student collaboration.

Coming from Austin, Texas, Mia brings additional experience from the Blanton Museum of Art, Mexic-Arte Museum, the Harry Ransom Center, the Neill-Cochran House Museum, and the UT Austin Visual Arts Center, where she co-curated “The Modern Cowboy”.

We are thrilled to officially welcome Mia to the team and look forward to the creativity, enthusiasm, and expertise she will bring to the Galleries as we prepare for an exciting year ahead.

Last month, the Georgetown University Art Galleries were delighted to participate in Georgetown’s annual alumni weekend, John Carroll Weekend, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Each year, the weekend takes place in a different location around the world, and this time offered a wonderful opportunity to engage with Puerto Rico’s vibrant contemporary art community.

Led by our Director & Chief Curator, the Galleries welcomed alumni, university leaders, faculty, and friends of Georgetown for a day exploring contemporary art across the island. Guests visited the homes of Allora & Calzadilla in Old San Juan home filled with interventions of their work, explored Gisela Colón’s exhibition at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico, and ended the evening with a reception and collection visit hosted by María and Alberto de la Cruz.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for such a meaningful and memorable experience! We loved sharing these artists and conversations with you and look forward to welcoming you to the galleries in DC soon.

Join the Georgetown University Art Galleries and the Department of Art & Art History for the Senior Reception & Misty Dailey Award Ceremony on April 30 from 6–8 pm at Maria & Alberto de la Cruz Art Gallery.

The evening will celebrate the debut of Georgetown University’s graduating Studio Art majors, featuring Emily Higgins, Lindsay Khalluf, Olivia Li, Brigid O’Connor, and Kyle Tso in the Senior Art Major Exhibition — on view April 30 – May 17.

This exhibition marks the culmination of their time at Georgetown, with work spanning painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, printmaking, and design & new media—reflecting the breadth of the Department of Art & Art History.

The opening reception will be held in conjunction with the Misty Dailey Awards Ceremony. First awarded in 1993, the Misty Dailey Awards recognize excellence across the department, including Art History research papers, short-form writing, and outstanding senior projects by Studio Art majors.

Enjoy music, hors d’oeuvres, and drinks as we celebrate this year’s graduating class. 🎉
