Last month, the Georgetown University Art Galleries were delighted to participate in Georgetown’s annual alumni weekend, John Carroll Weekend, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Each year, the weekend takes place in a different location around the world, and this time offered a wonderful opportunity to engage with Puerto Rico’s vibrant contemporary art community.

Led by our Director & Chief Curator, the Galleries welcomed alumni, university leaders, faculty, and friends of Georgetown for a day exploring contemporary art across the island. Guests visited the homes of Allora & Calzadilla in Old San Juan home filled with interventions of their work, explored Gisela Colón’s exhibition at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico, and ended the evening with a reception and collection visit hosted by María and Alberto de la Cruz.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for such a meaningful and memorable experience! We loved sharing these artists and conversations with you and look forward to welcoming you to the galleries in DC soon.

Join the Georgetown University Art Galleries and the Department of Art & Art History for the Senior Reception & Misty Dailey Award Ceremony on April 30 from 6–8 pm at Maria & Alberto de la Cruz Art Gallery.

The evening will celebrate the debut of Georgetown University’s graduating Studio Art majors, featuring Emily Higgins, Lindsay Khalluf, Olivia Li, Brigid O’Connor, and Kyle Tso in the Senior Art Major Exhibition — on view April 30 – May 17.

This exhibition marks the culmination of their time at Georgetown, with work spanning painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, printmaking, and design & new media—reflecting the breadth of the Department of Art & Art History.

The opening reception will be held in conjunction with the Misty Dailey Awards Ceremony. First awarded in 1993, the Misty Dailey Awards recognize excellence across the department, including Art History research papers, short-form writing, and outstanding senior projects by Studio Art majors.

Enjoy music, hors d’oeuvres, and drinks as we celebrate this year’s graduating class. 🎉

The Georgetown University Art Galleries are pleased to host Great Women Writers ‘26, an evening of bilingual lightning readings presented by the Faculty of Literatures, Cultures, and Language Studies.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, students and faculty will share poetry, prose, and essays by women writers from across history and around the world, reflecting on the theme of mythologies. Readings will be presented in English translation alongside original languages including Arabic, German, Greek, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish.

Audience-choice awards and a reception will follow.

View the exhibition tour and interview with artist Diana Al-Hadid where the she walks us through “unbecoming,” offering insight into the works on view and the ideas that shape her practice.

The exhibition, on view in our de la Cruz Gallery, is a survey of paintings and sculptures by Diana Al-Hadid that examines how constructions of femininity take form over time. The artist’s reworking of materials and form is a process that models how one can similarly transform the social expectations about womanhood and women’s behavior to instead find the power in being “unbecoming.”

“unbecoming” is organized by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University and curated by Rachel Winter, Ph.D., Assistant Curator, with support from Laine Lord, former Curatorial Research Assistant.

Join the Georgetown University Art Galleries next Thursday, February 12, 6–8 PM for a conversation with Diana Al-Hadid on her artistic and research practices. Refreshments will be provided.

Set within the exhibition “unbecoming”, Al-Hadid will be present to highlight her reworking of materials and form as a way to uncover and challenge deeper themes of womanhood across mythology, art history, and global literature. “unbecoming” is a survey of paintings and sculptures by Al-Hadid that examines how constructions of femininity take form over time.

Diana Al-Hadid is a New York-based artist who works prolifically between painting, sculpture, and more recently, handmade paper. Born in Syria in 1981, Al-Hadid moved to the United States as a child. She grew up in Ohio, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kent State University, and a Master of Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Last weekend, we kicked off our Spring season at the Georgetown University Art Galleries. Thank you for celebrating with us!

Our opening reception for “Diana Al-Hadid: unbecoming”, “speculative morphologies”, and “You Were Meant to See This” brought together more than 600 guests for an inspiring evening of conversation, connection, and celebration of contemporary art.

The galleries are open during normal hours this weekend. Bundle up, plan your visit, and we look forward to seeing you soon!
